The Peachtree Decco seems an elegant design that provides much versatility. However, I really doubt that a tube preamp section and good DAC will transform mp3s into aural nirvana. With $700 to spend for loudspeakers you could listen to the Paradigm Titan Monitors or the PSB Image T45s.

A desktop system with vinyl? That's a big desk!

Anyway, something like a Marantz PM 7001 integrated would be a possible alternative. I dunno what you need a dac for?

Certified refurbished can be had HERE for $449.00 and HERE USED for $300.00. Add a pair of the Stereophile recommended PSB bookshelves, I think they are around $250.00. This should be an overperforming desktop system for alot less money that could still be expanded upon. Food for thought.

It won't literally be a desktop system. I just want something I can use my laptop on (as well as my turntable) that will be the center of my current budget minded music system. I don't need a DAC but see the decco labeled as such.
I like the suggestions. I do like the tube sound but right now budget is the idea, something that sounds good that will get me by.

Thanks for the suggestions.
EDIT: I should add all my stored music is WMA lossless. I'm not trying to polish a turd.

edit to clarify: I should stress that I am looking to build a desktop system...

Ahem...if you want recommendations please get your edits in order. In a desktop system it is assumed the speakers will sit atop the desk. This is hardly the optimal placement for speakers and would therefore slant recommendations for investing large dollars on desktop speakers and possibly other components as well.

I can appreciate the need to be clear. I apologize if my terminology confused you and hope I can clarify further, though most of the desktop systems I have seen didn't locate the speakers on the actual desk.

Any speakers will most likely be on stands. I was simply saying desktop to imply that I would be utilizing my laptop as part of the means to play music. Point of fact most equipment would be placed on my computer desk, but the speakers will be placed where they can produce the best image. Otherwise I think my budget and needs have been explained.

The integrated I used at a local high end store to audition my Era Design 4 was a Decco. I was very impressed with it at the time I heard it.

Peachtree is just about to ship their new 80 wpc integrated, the Nova. It's supposed to have a world-class DAC, a Class A preamp section, and put out a lot of current for driving only moderately efficient speakers. The notes on it at CES by the editors here were quite positive. $1199 is the price.

Hi Winky.

Assuming that the Decco is a given (for me, the name Scott Nixon = get it while you can), I'm going to address the speakers. How far from your "desk" do you plan to locate the speakers? Is your desk up against a wall (which would force you to locate the speakers to the sides of the desk and also up aginst [or on ] the wall)?
