Welcome to the Stereophile Forums.
You need to recheck the zeroing of the tonearm weight. You described the proper thing, but I wonder if the weight slipped a little when you locked it down. (I don't know your TT, but that's a common thing, for things to slip). It doesn't take much of a slip to get the weight off by a gram, which is huge for the cartridge.

First, don't play any records until this is corrected. Having the tracking force set too light can really damage the record (worse than having it too heavy).
I think you should borrow someone's tracking for gauge (or buy one yourself - the Shure is a good one at $20-$30.
If this was the procedure you followed, you did things backward. You need to zero out the arm and antiskate first, then adjust the counterweight for neutral balance.

Wow, you guys are great! I've ordered a tracking gauge, and I'm going to call Numark tomorrow about the counterweight position. I'm a little bit unsure about the 2 positions where the counterweight locks into place while I'm trying to adjust it.
That beginners guide helps a lot, too. Although it's pretty intimidating.
I'm beginning to understand how this can become an obsession. When you stop listening to the music and start listening for the flaws in the sound, it can get a little maddening!
Anybody wanna hear something really funny?
my counterweight was on backwards.
All this time I was wondering why the number of grams seemed to go in the wrong direction.
Thanks for your help- I hope in return I gave you a good laugh!
Yep, that's a chuckle.
You don't have the cartridge on backwards too, do you?
Just kiddin'.
Good luck.
This thread got me thinking. I finally realized I had my keyboard facing the wrong way! Maybe now I'll start makng sense.
I bet that record set up would have perfectly in this house...
It's good to hear the problem was simple. You'll put the tracking force gauge to good use anyway.
