Spend $100, it'll be worth it in time; http://www.audiogon.com/cgia/fsb.pl?preaphon

Don't bother with battery power for now.

You might want to see if Needle Doctor has a replacement stylus/cartidge for the existing Panasonic table; http://www.needledoctor.com/

I guess, though, I'm wondering...

If people have older TTs, do they usually end up buying newer ones like a Pro-ject?

Are there advantages with buying a good preamp with an older TT rather than just a newer entry level TT.

I guess I'm weighing the difference between spending say 100-150 on a preamp, or just buy one of the $400 Projects that seem to be good entry level TT.

What do people on the forum generally prefer? Older TTs with good preamps? or newer TTs with built in preamps?

Hope I'm not being too difficult.

In many systems, the phono preamp is either a separate component between the TT and the amp, or it is an included part of an integrated amp. In your situation, I'd go for the low cost separate component as JV suggested and use it with the Technics TT you have available.

Sas - I checked out the needle Dr. online, but my needle that I'm using on my panasonic is actually still working. I'm just thinking for the future in case we want to move the panosonic to another room.

On a similar note, though, I went to a DJ supply company nearby and they have a Behringer PP400...Review online seem pretty decent, but it's dirt cheap...$30...should I be suspicious of something so cheap? Any experiences with it?

The other question I have is grounding...

If I got this Behringer, I hook my Technics up to it, stick a piece of speaker wire in the ground port, put the other end in the preamp, connect that to the LG, and then...

Well, I'm no electrician, but even though there's a ground wire, what exactly is grounded? My LG doesn't have a ground wire attached to it. the Behringer has a 12v adaptor, but is that grounded? So I'm not exactly sure where the ground wire is going to ground.

P.S. - everyone, thanks for all your help.

Jeff

People do all kinds of things. Some people buy new stuff and some people keep their old stuff. As long as they had "stuff" George Carlin was happy.

The table should be of a higher quality than the pre amp.

It's your money but most tables don't have built in pre amps.

People prefer "stuff". It doesn't matter which is old stuff and which is new stuff, just as long as you have more stuff. Though the thought of combining stuff rather than having separate stuff is not that appealing to a stuff addict.

The arm and cartridge are grounded to the pre amp.

Yep!

Chassis ground.

Broken

If you are looking for a good phono stage that won't break the bank but would also serve you pretty well if the high end audio bug bit and you ended up with a much nicer system you should look at the affordable Project brand or NAD.
