Uhhhh dude, seeing as how you are in college, let me first suggest a few things.
1st: Use a Spell Checker.
2nd: Do a bit of research (online, or in magazines and/or books at your library).
3rd: "load" is the stuff on your chin, not a volume setting.
But all those points aside, you might just want to go with a set of powered or "active" speakers that hook up directly to your computer. This means that you do not need seperate boxes of amplification and all that other good stuff. $500 can get you in the door, but for your needs, and with your budget, I'd start searching for stand-alone powered speakers that can accept some kind of digital input(s), or at the very least, RCA jacks from a single cable (that probably splits into two at the speaker end but comes out of a single jack on your computer).
Good luck,
Jake
It's spelled LOUD, not load. Frankly I have to wonder about college admissions policies with some of the spelling examples that I have seen on the "net". If your only desire is "loud", go to Circuit City and get the Sony 100 wpc receiver, the biggest subwoofer you can afford, and a set of Infinity Primus 150 loudspeakers. It won't be of "audiophile" quality but it will be loud. Your budget won't allow the purchase of a true "audiophile" quality system that is "loud" so forget about it. In total you'll probably be spending around 400 bucks. I would suggest that you use the balance of your funds to purchase a dictionary.
Note: I am assuming that since your source is going to be your computer that you will be playing "downloaded" MP-3 files. Because of this, I'll tell you straight out that spending money on an "audiophile" grade system would be a total waste. Chances are that a really good system will only result in a system that reveals every compromise in the MP-3 format with absolutely glaring clarity.
Someday soon, you may wander into a true Audio shop and hear what real music sounds like on a truly good system. When that happens your jaw will probably hit the floor. Don't sweat the money you spent on your "loud" system. Those Infinity speakers are pretty good and, with a "proper" source, that receiver you bought may just be "useable". What you
Hey, I have what may be the perfect solution for you.

I have a buddy who bought the Audio Engine 5 speakers to hook up to his laptop and iPod, and they sound really really good for the money!
Around 350 bucks, delivered.
Then ya gotta buy the communicating dock-thing for an iPod, but I think the computer hooks straight in.
They play reasonably "load" and we've used them for some outdoor parties with good result.
I honestly can't say enough nice things about them.
Welcome to the site, by the way.
Check out the Computer Audio forum here, there are some other cool gizmos that may pop your mind open to Hi Fi and still allow you to use your laptop!
In Hoc, David (Beta Epsilon, University of Utah). Forgive Jake -- he can't even spell "separate." Also, forgive Scooter, who uses cliches (the last time my jaw dropped to the floor, it was from an overdose of gin) and can't escape the dreaded clutches of quotation marks. One can only shudder at where either would be without a robot to do the spelling.
I wish I could help you with your request, but, audio snobbery aside, I would suggest you follow Buddha's recommendation -- you can spend the leftover $150 on condoms (you'll need 'em for the Chi Omegas!!) or booze.
Welcome to the forum. You don't REALLY need a spell-check to let us know how you're doing, but your sense of humor may be sorely tested. Cheers, Clifton.
Drat, you got me that time, Brother Clifton, but I will be back to spell correctly on another day!
David O, I read your other posts on the forum. It seems like you really want it loud. No harm in that, but $500 will only get you so far when it comes to loud....at least in the hi-fi world. I would say that you need to invest in some headphones, a good headphone amp, and a nice little CD player. That way, after you have finished studying, you can just sit back and relax in your own little world.
Make your friends spring for the loud system and put it in the main living room. Take it out of the montly dues.
And dont forget to crack a book before you crack a beer.

Jake, if it was for only my personal enjoyment, I
Does anyone else think that this is DUP just messing with us? If not, may I suggest a pair of horn loaded headphones? That should be plenty load while sparing the rest of us from having to listen to your lack of taste.
