Matterhorn Audio Group – Plaza 1: Kroma Atelier, Aavik, Technics, Linn, Creek, Ansuz, HiDiamond, PSI
One of the showpiece rooms at Capital Audiofest 2024 was the Matterhorn Audio Group demo in Plaza 1, which is essentially a small ballroom. The rarefied systems shown were up to the task of filling the spacious room with beautiful music.
I stopped in to shoot photos and immediately noticed the quality of the sound, the beauty of the equipment’s aesthetics, and the inviting ambience of the space. The lighting, décor and of course the system itself were all highly conducive to enjoying great music.
At the center of the room stood an impressive selection of speakers distributed by Matterhorn, including the Kroma Atelier Turandot and Thais models. The Turandot, with prices starting at $288,000/pair, is the flagship, no-holds-barred full-range (20Hz-25kHz) speaker system with a 1000W power rating. It delivered a blend of unquestioned strength and sophistication. Meanwhile, the more compact Thais ($24,000/pair), contain similar technology and provide a lively and captivating audio experience.
Supporting these speakers was a suite of electronics by Aavik. The C-880 preamplifier ($70,000) and P-880 power amplifier ($70,000) worked seamlessly together. The Aavik R-580 phono stage ($25,200) paired with the Technics SL-1000-R turntable ($19,999) and Ortofon Verismo cartridge ($6999) creating a rarefied analog experience, one capable of conveying the finest texture and detail.
For streaming, the setup featured the Linn Klimax DSM Organik and its new Utopik power supply ($42,000). Powering the system were Linn Solo 800 monoblocks ($45,000/each). PSI AVAA C20 bass traps ($3125/each), played a role in managing low frequencies, tightening bass response and contributing to a precise, realistic sound.
At CAF2024, Matterhorn Audio Group provided an exceptional listening experience, demonstrating the sonic capabilities of carefully matched high-end systems.
