Nothing that could be laid at the feet of the speaker's likes and dislikes should have affected any component upstream of the amplifiers. It sounds more like you've had a lightning strike or power surge. I would investigate getting the products repaired if I liked them. Certainly a Rotel is unlikely to give the same performance as the McCormack. Ask for an estimate of repair costs before committing to spending any more money. Most shops will apply the small cost of estimating the damage/repairs to any actual repairs you decide to have done.
It may well be a ground issue. Often times when you bridge an amp you need to float the ground and connect your speaker cables differently. I had an amp that would use the two positive terminals for mono connections.
Did McCormick cover this when you spoke to him or have you looked at your manual to see if this is the recommended connection when going mono?
