Magnepan

I have the offer of having a nice juicy set of Magnepan ribbons. Now as i understand it these things go all the way down to less than 1 Ohm and can be difficult to drive properly.

Now My current system ends in a Meridian 556 Amplifier. I just bet the cureent limit circuit will just hop all over the drive current if Magnepans are connected (Unless I unpick the 1N4148's out)

Has anyone run these before? and what Amplifiers did you get best results from?

Many thanks

Re: Magnepan

I can't recall the Maggies having such low impedance. I wonder if whoever told you that was thinking of Apogees.

Anyway, go here:

http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/MUG/bbs.html

That is basically the internet Maggie forum and they are nice guys who love Magneplanars.

Post your question there and I bet you get some great answers.

Best wishes.

Let us know what you end up learning and doing!

Re: Magnepan

I'd stick with amps from MN to match speakers from MN. Get some Ultra amps from AVA 550 should do ya good. www.avahifi.com I have found over time the best symbiosis between stuff is by having them from at least teh same country, gets better when from the same time zone, then same state. It is AUDIBLE. Even if close states, better than say an amp from NY and speakers fropm CA. I use amps from MN with speakers from IL. So it really works out well. But then AVA usually ALWAYS works well sounds great.

Re: Magnepan

Speakers from MN definitely do not work well with amps from WI!

Re: Magnepan

I wish to thank you all for your input -- and thank you Buddah for the linkage -- that did help.

I have now spent my money and I'm not regretting it

I already had my Roksan Caspian CD player running through a Musical fidelity "The PreAmp" and through my Meridians.

I got rid of the Meridians and went for a second hand Krell KSA 150 (didnt have the money to do Mags and new amp)-- I got the MG 3.6 Mags -- and the difference between them and my old KEF 104/2 Reference is just mindblowing.

I'll do some photos soon

Re: Magnepan

Well you beat me to it by getting the Krell, which is what I'd have suggested. In the store I worked at in college the rule of thumb seemed to be that if you were in the market (or owned) ribbons or electrostatics, get a Krell (or two). Actually, "get a Krell" is pretty good advice for almost any difficult speaker.

Re: Magnepan

Ditto the congrats.
Krell + Maggie = great music.

You should have no problems with the Krell driving 3.6s.

Be careful with the ribbon tweeter though, they are can be damaged, replacements are readily available from Magnepan and not too expensive.

Re: Magnepan

Oh no they don't! They just need ENDLESS tweaking to get things right. SPECIAL tweaks...like making sure you don't put the #1 speaker where the #2 should be! I solved this one by labeling speaker 1 "THE MONOLITH#1" and..."THE MONOLITH#2"(I knew watching that movie would pay off someday!). Adds color to the chorus of "WHAT the #$%@ are THOSE?!?!" from my non-audiophile friends who are then knocked out by the sound! Hope yet, eh lads and lasses!?
Oh, All Black 1.4s in case you're wondering, driven by an ST"210"(140 mkII).
