Perhaps I should elaborate on the two amps. The KingRex, http://www.audio-magus.com/Kingrex_Preamplifier_p/krpa.htm, which has won a 6moon award, a least feigns an attempt at being "high-end." Whereas the Audiosource is simply your "average," sturdy, component. In my opinion, the choice between these two pre-amps is nothing less than the choice between so-called high end components, and scientifically sensible components. The decision betwixt these preamplifiers calls into question the very foundation upon which this very site stands.
I was sort of hopping for a little more response... Sure, one can go on reviewing half-million dollar equipment, or lauding the cautionless expenditure of many thousands of dollars on mere cables. But, ultimately, one must face the simple question - the essential question - does it matter. Do the gold binding posts, the gaudy capacitors, the silver solder - not to mention the distortion filled tubes - really change the way I relate to music. Seemingly, the answer for most would be a resounding YES. If, however, that is truly the case then those same deep pocketed experts shouldn't hesitate to offer a simpleton a little advice on his choice of preamplifier.
One begins to wonder when the only electronic stores - in a city of thousands - that employ workers who buy into a quarter of the words abundantly present on this forum are the stores one must be buzzed into: the stores whose employees don't wish to talk to someone unwilling to spend thousands and unable to tolerate their weasel wording.
Should I hold the line?
bump
I am bumping this again as the question has become relevant, again. It still, however, remains unanswered.
That would appear to be your answer.
Perhaps I sounded a bit harsh, and for that I apologize. I suppose I was frustrated that no one had responded to my post while 5-10 responded to someone who had gotten a pair of RTi A9's. I can't edit the post now anyway. I'm really interested in any, and all, equipment that sells for under 1000 smackers. Anything else is simply too much for me to afford on the small amount I make as a writing tutor.
I don't understand why you wouldn't want the prize winning equipment unless you are certain its personality just isn't a match for your tastes or it electrically does not fit into your system. The Audio Source is average at best.
Have you looked into the possibility of buying a used preamp that would most likely be better than either the Audio Source or the KingRex for about the same money? Possibly an old Adcom, Rotel, NAD, PS Audio, etc. There are some great deals to be had in used gear.
Mrlowry, thanks. Ya, I think you are probably right. I think I might be able to get some great deals on an ADCOM. You really think the ADCOM would be better than the Kingrex, though? Can you recommend anything in specific?
I haven't heard a KingRex nor an Audiosource premap (but their amp sounded like the blandest mashed potatoes) to be honest with you. But that's part of my point. The KingRex doesn't have much of a track record, whereas the companies that I mentioned do. Those companies have been solid and consistent performers for decades in some cases. That doesn't make the KingRex bad mind you but it is a gamble. When getting into a hobby it's always wiser to benefit from the experience and knowledge of others than it is to take a bunch of risks and fall flat on your face. There is plenty of time for that later.
