The June Issue . . .

. . . is here and Art Dudley feels that in the age of streaming, there is still life in the CD medium, as typified by Rega's new Apollo player. Art's enthusiastic review is joined by reviews of EgglestonWorks' 20th anniversary Viginti speaker; Bryston's BP173 preamplifer; Rogers High Fidelity's single-ended 65V-1 amplifier; the NOS Formula xHD DAC from Italian company Aqua Acoustic; and comparisons between preamplifiers from Ayre and PS Audio.

Jim Austin concludes his technical analysis of the controversial MQA format with an interview with Bob Stuart, where he talks about "post-Shannon sampling," Robert Baird interviews legendary recording engineer Steve Albini about the Loudness Wars, and kicking it all off, Robert Schryer wonders if the explosive growth of high fidelity in the late 1960s was a byproduct of the "tune-in, turn-on" counterculture.

AD is an observant Man. The CD and SACD still have plenty of life in 2018. Now, if we can get more cd/sacd spinners built from the manufacturers?

Hello, whichever Stereophile staff may be monitoring this thread:

Can you tell us when we will see Herb's follow up review of the Joseph Audio Pulsar speakers?

Thank you!

I can't find any mention of the Tyll retirement in this issue, hmm?

Was it unknown 2 months ago ?

was it meant to be a secret ? , JA didn't mention it at Axpona

or something unmentionable ?

ps. this is an important Story that needs to be told because Tyll is "The" Patriarch of the Headphone Community and the coincidence of New Ownership and Tyll Retirement is a bad omen for things to come. Is there a >>>)))))))'> smell here?

Yes, it came as a complete surprise around a month ago after the June issue had gone to press.

As Tyll wrote, there was no connection. The two things that triggered his decision were his finishing his camper van conversion years ahead of anticipated and the significant decline in his hearing.

I'm rather suspecting that Tyll sold his business to "get out on top". He probably has a "2 Year no-compete" clause in the Sale Agreement and might even retain ( hold ) a percentage slice ( I certainly would).

Please note that Tyll had no ownership interest in InnerFidelity.com and was a full-time employee first of TEN Publishing then of AVTech Media, just like me.

We expect to be able to announce who will be the new editor of InnerFidelity.com in the next few days.

Thanks for explaining.

It's far too sudden, almost like : there was no Crash yet the Air Bags deployed.

On the Plus Side, HR is churning-out some wonderful descriptions. Who else could convincingly embrace a love for tiny power amplifiers? HR is "Everyman's" Audiophile. Please don't raid his stash.

ps. riding around in that box will destroy another 50% of Tyll's remaining hearing ability, those things are worse than being a Competitive Rifleman ( like I once was ) or Artiliary Infantryman. It's illegal to wear hearing protection while operating a Delivery Van ( I would still be wearing 3M sound absorbing ear plugs and Mickey Mouse Ear Muffs while inside one of those Boomer Boxes... Whew ). Flying a Cessna "Requires" ( mandates ) the wearing of a "Noise Cancelling Headphone" !

dalethorn's picture

There are smart earplugs like the V-MODA Faders that protect hearing and allow necessary sounds to come through. There are also smart shooter muffs today that do something similar.

According to this article

His hearing "isn't what it used to be".

and can be re-curved now-a-days, especially with headphones.

I'm rather suspecting that Tyll sold his business to "get out on top". He probably has a "2 Year no-compete" clause in the Sale Agreement and might even retain ( hold ) a percentage slice ( I certainly would ).

I'd think that Tyll will have an Agent finding Speaking Gigs and other Public Appearances lining up for the next few years.

One thing for sure, he ain't gonna live the rest of his life inside that little box, hidden behind a Walmart just off the Freeway. "Put" is a traveler not a home. I expect Tyll will now have a Home Base in New Mexico or Florida or somewhere where quality of life is in abundance. Guys that do that "wandering life" last about one year before they hafta find some "Creature Comforts" and stable friends & neighbors to keep an eye on yer Back. Using the nearby Starbucks as your Office gets rather old rather quickly, especially if the LAW is keeping a weary Eye on you. A person driving a nondescript Delivery Van gets noticed quickly, ( this guy could be on a heist ...)

Tyll seems to have the same Esteem level in Headphones that Harry Pierson had in High End.
