Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio: The Creation of the Universe is an exhibition currently running from January 27 - April 15, 2012 at the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach (1250 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach, CA). A recorded live performance from Reed’s band Metal Machine Trio is reproduced as a fully immersive 3D sound environment, recreated to simulate the experience as the musician surrounded by sound, rather than as the listener in front of it: “Reed himself mixed over-modulated feedback and guitar effects at varying speeds to create an ebb and flow of organic atonality that is only experienced on stage.” Recording and sound design for this 3D project was conducted by the specialists at Arup.

This event is co-curated by museum director Chris Scoates and Martin Fleischmann of Rum & Humble, as part of their What is Recorded Energy: talk/art/performance program, which “focuses on the frontier of new sonic creation. Events explore the space in the musical spectrum where electronic melds with symphonic, synths meet timps, and digital interweaves with analog.” On Thursday, March 1, 7-8pm, Metal Machine Trio band member Ulrich Krieger, gives visitors an inside look on the production of the UAM Project Room Arup SoundLab Installation.
