Stereophile at Other Music

I went to Other Music yesterday and picked up a few records:

Nicolas Jaar’s Space Is Only Noise, Jannick Schous’ Act of Shimmering, a nice-looking reissue of John Cage and David Tudor’s Indeterminancy: New Aspect of Form in Instrumental and Electronic Music, the split 12” from Grouper and Inca Ore, Amon Tobin’s “Surge” remix 12”, and another 12” featuring awesome remixes of Radiohead’s “Little by Little” (by Caribou) and “Lotus Flower” (by Jacques Greene).

With all those records beneath my happy arm, I gave up my place on line, smiled at the newsstand display, and snapped this photograph.

I love seeing my favorite magazine on sale at my favorite record store.

Here's an idea: You can head over to Other Music at 15 East 4th Street, buy some records, buy Stereophile, read about the Voxativ Ampeggio, then walk around the block to Audioarts at 1 Astor Place and listen to your new records through the Voxativ Ampeggio.

(Make an appointment with Audioarts before showing up, though.)

LUV your continued support of EDM music Stephen! I've been rockin electronic music, not only on the decks as a DJ, but since I attended some of the first Brooklyn S.T.O.R.M raves in the early 90's.  I even dropped a few of those records on the big system at Harry's (Pearsons) years ago!  Many electronic music producers and devotees are totally into the sonic integrity of their work - and we need to keep exposing philes to it.  See you ar RMAF?!?!?

Thanks very much, Mike.  I think electronic music is more creative (and stranger and more rewarding) than almost anything being released today.  And it just sounds so good on the hi-fi, often with such thrilling spatial effects and thunderous lows.  It's a lot of fun.

Yes, I'll be at RMAF.  See you there.

I love seeing my favorite magazine on sale at my favorite record store. What a joy Stephen...kinda remind me sadly of my favorite cd store that was closed down almost a year ago...a place of comfort & happiness that gone away quite suddenly. As happy as I were at the last few weeks of the store where I managed to buy about 25 cd at 30% & 50% discount, the feeling of lost was already strongly felt. Having new-good 25 music is always something to be cheerful & excited about, but at the same time thinking about the unfortunate close-down  brought  mixed feelings, being the bad ones overshadowed the good ones.

Btw, the september issue is on newstand in Jakarta already since 4 August, which is about 10 days earlier than usual, a nice surprise. Just wondering, is it really early publish/release by you or just a more timely import here?

I still haven't finished reading the august issue, been saving few articles, including your column Stephen, for another week or so until the usual time for the next issue becomes available. Can speed up the reading a bit now, looking forward to read the next fresh issue..

Wow, it's cool to hear from someone as far away from NYC as Jakarta!

I have no idea why the September issue is early for you. I think it's just a matter of chance or circumstance. There are people in the States who still haven't received it.

Greetings to u too Stephen, I'm sure I'm not the only regular reader of your magz here, although I can't tell whether there are many others or just few. I know that music lovers & audiophiles are quite many here.

One unfortunate thing for us here is the high price of imported magz, be it from the US or Europe. For instance Stereophile cost US$ 13, In-Style (fashion mag) is $ 10.5, Jazztimes $ 10. Considering the local income level which is only about 20% of that in US, these prices are seriously high.

Imported cd price is also high about $16 – $ 22, with small number of new titles available. Locally made cd is cheaper, but has lower sound quality, at around $ 8 – $ 11. Lp availability is even more limited, priced around $ 40 - 50.

I think the reason for the high magz & cd price is, at least one of them,  tax & duty in Indonesia.

Hifi gear price is around the same compared to price in US (MSRP). Many brands are priced at MSRP, some others offer 10 to 25% discount from MSRP, some are higher than MSRP.

What is the regular time for Stereophile to be available on NYC’s or US’ newsstand?

It varies, but is usually around the 15th of the month.
