You can usually get NIB Infinity Primus 150s for $100 a pair on eBay. I think they are probably the best option of those listed. http://www.stereophile.com/budgetcomponents/404infinity/
For a kick-ass T-Amp: http://www.audiodigit.com/index.php?section=83
You could also look at the Event line of powered monitor speakers. Tannoy even has some new Reveals that sound excellent as well. For close up work this is where you may want to look.
Sweetwater
This is also where a nice pair of cans might work...AKG 601/701s or for less the $99 Sony 7506 or Sennheiser HD280's.
Thanks for all feedback.
I've definitely considered powered studio monitors, but I'm skeptical of the sound. I worked for years in recording studios, and recognize that "the small speakers" were usually employed in mixing because they represented a lowest common denominator (Think Yamaha NS-10.)
Cans are also a good suggestion, but I'm actually trying to get away from using them--I've got a lovely pair of Sennheiser HD-580s, but my background means I eventually came to dislike wearing them.
The Infinity 150 is surely tempting at the price, though I wonder if a smaller speaker would work better so close.
Right now, the SuperZeros are looking like strong contenders. Small makes sense to me in this application, and a slight bass deficiency will actually increase the WAF.
More feedback welcome...
I like paradigm so you might want to tcheck the Atoms out they are about $189 a pair add $3o for magshielding. But I don't know how are at nearfield.
Stereophile review of the current Atom speaker
I recall a/d/s bookshelf speakers sounding very clean... I believe the ones I heard on a regular basis during the early 90s had metal enclosures and were pretty small.
www.legacyaudio.com Check out the Studios.
Dup,the man said inexpensive and the most expensive he quoted is $120.The Studios are $860+ !
The story goes that Al Schmitt of Diana Krall fame uses the Yamahas. His wife is the audiophile in the family. She asked him why he listened to such a bad, awful set of speakers?
His response was that if he could get a work he recorded to sound good on those it would sound good on anything!
Go figure...
$860 is just the same thing with different numbers. When it doesn't meet the budget, that means someone made a mistake on the budget. Politicans do it all the time, overruns, etc. Budgets are meant to be ignored, then revised and redone. Consider it a cost overrun, no big deal. It'll be better. Remember it's easier to ask forgivness than to ask permission.
