I dug out my issue and read the review. The nuts and bolts review suggests that this speaker is quite good at imaging, soundstaging and bass extension. On the other hand, the treble (soft dome) is a little spitty and forward, but can be corrected somewhat by firing the speakers straight ahead as opposed to toeing them in toward the listener.
The Image 200 landed in class C and was measured to have a sensitivity of around 85db and remained around 4-6 ohms and should be specified as 6 ohm nominal. Recommended amp of at least 50 watts and comfortable with a 4 ohm load. The cabinet consists of a vinyl wrap with a 3/4 tweeter centered between 2, 6 1/2" drivers. She has a large rear port.
The measurements were pretty darn good considering they sold for 1K at the time. The review observations were mostly positive.
If there is anything in particular you want to know I'll be happy to look it up if you can be somewhat specific.
Monty, That was exactly the response I was looking for. Thank you very much for going through your stereophile magazine collection for the review. Thank you again, I appreciate it very very much -Tony
You're welcome. Btw, like Proac, the speakers come as matched pairs and have drivers that are slightly off center so be sure the pair you are considering are mated.
These speakers appear to be a bit special. A nice find if you can get a pair in decent shape.
Monty I have a pair of IMAGE speakers and I'm having trouble finding a supplier in order to replace a tweeter. I live in NYC but bought the speakers in Canada. Any info on the subject would be appreciated.
The speakers were part of Audio Products International. They are still in business, but the tweeter will probably be very hard to source. Here is their current contact information if you want to see if they have any ideas on a replacement.
The concept 200 was one of my all-time favorite speakers. They did require a 200-watt/channel amp to approach their full potential, I powered them with two 500 watt monoblocks. The Image Concept 100/200 tweeter is simply not reliable; I went through 3 replacement tweeters during the time I had them (from 1990-1998). The Image Concept 200 was an extremely satisfying speaker for listening to electronic music, hip-hop, and reggea/dub.
Hi - I was wondering if anyone has had any success finding replacement tweeters for the Image Concept 200 speakers. Apparently the Image Concept 100 speakers used the same tweeters. Mine were purchased in 1989 and somehow lasted until now.
By the way, I have the original Image sales brochure as well as reprints of two reviews from 1988, one from Stereophile and one from Sound and Vision magazine. Feel free to PM me about these.
Take the damaged tweeter out of the box, and show us it complete. from the back. I need to see the magnet/motor assembly..and most definitely any stickers attached to it.
Then remove the faceplate, and show me the dome assembly, which is likely removable.
I suspect it is a Vifa D19, with a custom faceplate..and the tweeter crossover is at a lower frequency than it should be, due to woofer issues. Thus the spitty tweeter sound. It's driven too hard.
But photos are needed to affirm or trash this hypothesis. If it is a D19, it is likely you can fix these.
If the exact Vifa tweeter is unavailable, a set of far cheaper speakers that are USED, on eBay or the like, can be found that utilizes the same tweeter..and then..use those! You'll have a spare tweeter, even after fixing.
For example, I think..the small PSB alpha's use the same tweeter, and possibly the smallest atom speaker from paradigm. They sell quite cheap, especially with trashed boxes. Which do appear on eBay, no doubt. You don't care about the boxes, You just need the tweeters to work. So you might fix the pair for $50, shipping included..and have a spare tweeter, to boot. That kind of thing.
I have a beautiful pair of Image Concept 200s in Toronto, ON that I simply do not have room for. If anyone is interested, please message me with an offer.
Stumbled on this thread - I do have a sales brochure, ca 1988 - close to mint condition, from when I bought my Image Reference 2 - now sadly demised.....
I have a pair of Image speakers that I bought new in 1987 or 88, if I could get scans emailed to me of any brochures or magazine reviews I would very much appreciate it as I know next to nothing about these speakers except that I love the sound that I get out of them and they have served me well for many years now.
