What's the make and model of the Turntable? And age? The only thing I can think of is if it's an old direct drive it could've seized up the motor--- although I would think ti would happen while spinning. Ive seen other motors (like fans) that will heat up while being overworked and then LATER not start up. Doh! Hope that's not the case here.

if not direct drive, belt drive - broken belt? can you hear the motor at all?
