Good Dynaudio pair.
Totally wild toy to consider.
B&W 803's
Very interesting pair of Sonus Faber at almost half your budget!
AR 90's. Buy 'em and mod 'em! They play stinking loud and remain well behaved.
Lastly, if you want to go new, read the Stereophile review from April of the NHT T-6 system (and the full range follow-up in May [?])and kick your budget up to 4,000 bucks and live happily ever after!

Great example, Devon!
It would be helpful to know the dimensions of your listening room, particularly how close the speakers will be from the nearest walls, as well as your listening position. If your listening space is small, beware that many floorstanding speaker designs (in particular), may require considerable space in order to provide the best sonic performance and stereo imaging. Speakers with first-order crossovers, as well as those with front- or rear-ported woofers, are often not the best choice for small rooms. The ProAcs you mentioned may be a very good bet.
I would consider Anthony Gallo speakers in that price range.
As i was reading this,i also thought Gallo in that price range for sure! Check out the Gallo Nucleus Reference 3 speakers! They blew away a set of $4000 B&W's that i heard. The image was wider and the vocals more solid and positioned, and it just was no contest to me at all,and that was only with a Rotel 200x200 watt amp on them. Im sure a Bryston or Classe' or something would have been even better, and it was sourced with an Arcam CD player. They go for around $2300-2500US. My next speaker
