The air is more dry in the winter. This causes more static electricity to build up. A humidifier would help.
Yes, low humidity due to heat in the winter is the biggest problem I have with my setup, too. (I'm also in Michigan - a veritable winter wonderland!)
A small humidifier will help keep the static electricity at bay in your listening room and will help breathing, too. I have used a small steam one for a few years. The upside is that it is fairly quiet (not at all silent, though) and bacteria-safe as the boiling of of the water keeps things pretty sanitary. However, I have heard that "ultra-sonic" humidifiers are quieter, possibly approaching silent, and use a LOT less electicity. A steam humidifier is not an eco-friendly solution ...
