A 1/4" into 1/8" converter is very common. I've probably got four laying around the house, so don't let that worry you.
If you'd like to be overwhelmed with comparisons of headphones, lurk around www.head-fi.org They have about 1000 posts per hour. It's a very active group.
I'm using AKG K701s driven by a Woo Audio WA6 headphone amp. I couldn't be more pleased. You need to spend a lot more money to improve on the AKGs.
Top discussion on Head-fi senter around 701, Sennheiser 600 and 650, Beyerdynamic 770, 880 and 990 and a couple of Grado models. The 701 is the bargain of the group. There's also lots of discussion of IEMs (in-ear monitors).
Let us know what you do.

worried they may be a bit on the heavy side, so worried about neck fatigue etc. Also a tad expensive for myself.
the site also had a thread from someone who bout proline 750's and seem rather happy.
I know in theory you get what you pay for amp wise, and its becomming apparent that if you want decent sound you need one, but are there any particular headphones that spring to mind that sound rather good before they have been jacked into an amp?
