Welcome David. 1300-1500 LPs? When I was sixteen, I think I had about a dozen. I'm jealous. Have you even had time to listen to them all?

Welcome.

I'd really advise looking for a used Technics TT rather than building your own. You might have to move the budget up to $30 to get anything that won't eat your LPs. Look at Goodwill, Salvation Army, Craigslist and year sales.

I think there was a thread over at Audiogon about building a TT with material from Lowes. Search for "Lowes" in the Forums section. The challenge is steep, but I don't want to discourage a young man from tilting at this particular windmill. Who knows, I might be buying a TT from you ten-years from now.

Thanks for joining the forum, David. It's great to see you here! Your turntable project sounds very exciting, and I hope you'll share more with us as you continue to build your system and music collection.

This is just a fun project, and will not be my main table, as I already have a somewhat decent Technics.

If nothing else, It will be a 78 tranbscriber for my 78's to reels of tape. It's just a fun project..

I have already decided to do something different in the way of a plinth. I am going to take a scrap of plywood and cut it in the style of The Funk Firm bases (if I have the time to cut it and can scrounge the tools, if not, I'll just use the board as is), and then mount the motor and idler setup on that, along with the main bearing........just expirimenting with isolation and upgrades will be a LOT easier with a new plinth instead of the stock spring-loaded metal base and plinth....and the wood will make the motor quieter....at least quieter than when bolted to thin ringy metal....

And I would love to be able to say that I built a turntable and have it survive for my grandchildren with no maintenence....the parts I am using are sturdy enough for that....and I am pretty sure that if I mount the arm correctly and align it, and make sure that the stylus pressure is sufficient so that the arm tracks well, I should have no problems.
