The headphone jack is probably in line with the volume control and fed from the outputs of the amplifier rather than a separate headphone IC amp. You cleaned a bit of grunge from the contacts when you inserted the plug. It would be a good idea to have the entire unit serviced and cleaned by a qualified technician. The improvement in sound quality after a thorough cleaning is usually quite obvious.
