HE2007 is taking place in NY:

We couldn't get the dates we wanted at the hotel we wanted in Chicago, and senior management felt a return to Manhattan would be the best proposition.

I get tired of everything being in New York or Los Angles. Maybe Chicago should be called "The Third City." instead of "The Second City." Come to Chicago and you'll at least know what Pizza is all about.
I grew up in Aurora as did Cheapskate and we could only hope...I still may try and get to NY. Flights from ATL are cheap enough. The rooms are more than the Air Fare. Geez.
I suspect, John, that one of the considerations "senior management" took into account was the onerous financial burden that Chicago unions put on exibitors of any sort contemplating shows in our city. We've lost lots of convention business in recent years for that reason. Da Mayor just doesn't get it.
If HE 200? were to come here, I'd attend every day, and be willing to buy lots of drinks, but unfortunately that wouldn't begin cover the extra costs you guys would probably incur.
That union stuff is fascinating.
I know people who have to travel and display all over the place, and they hate hate hate Chicago.
They say that not only is it more expensive, the Byzantine rules of the conventions make set-up and tear-down agonizingly difficult; and during the show is not much better.
They told me that many conventions in Las Vegas have moved over to using "union concierges" who are allowed to step up and immediately handle small things without the need for four other union members leaning on counters to be involved.
These "helpers can plug in an electrical plug without requiring the requisitioning of a union electrician and being billed for a 30 minute service, etc...
Chicago seems to be a true bastion of "brothers" protecting each other's jobs at the expense of the industry.
(I'm pro-union, by the way, just against inefficiency.)
I'd be interested in hearing Stereophile's experience in different cities!
John,
Would senior management ever consider moving the venue to Atlanta? I mention this because there are audiophiles who live in the Southeast and Gulf states. NY is too far to travel/too expensive, but Atlanta is eminently reachable.
Just a thought.
