Blame magazine lead times. When the work was done preparing this review, back in October, I knew the MP revision would be coming in the New Year. However, I was preparing a big Web-exclusive study on CD player jitter -- see www.stereophile.com/features/1208jitter -- and I though a comparison between the two Ayre players would make a useful follow-up for the print magazine.
I will be having my C-5xe updated next month and there will be a follow-up in the June issue. (There's that long lead-time again.)

Thank you for the response!
Understandable, now when describing the printing-process further...
Great to hear that it will be a follow up later on this year!
Looking forward to that already!
The upgrade seems very promising and interesting...
Also enjoyed the comparision of the two Ayre players. Everyone mentions that the players need a long time to break in. Wonder if part of the reason the CX5e sounded better was because its been owned/used for over a year? Just a thought.
Does the player have to go into Ayre to become MP or can the filter be downloaded? If I understand the Mp filter, the most impact should be with red book cd and not DVD-A or SACD. Can't wait to read how you feel about the upgrade. Thinking of buying one or the other.
thanks

As I've heard they don't need to go into Ayre, but they need to go to an authorised dealer who's used to deal with upgrades in general.
I have also read though all the text on Ayre's homepage (recommendable!), and it seems very interesting!
Considering the cost for an upgrade, whith what I've heard and read it seems like a "no brainer"...!
