Trying to pick ones not listed yet, and albums that are totally Dylan based:

"Mostly Dylan," by Tom Corwin and Tim Hockenberry. Well recorded mostly acoustic driven covers.

"Is It Rolling, Bob?" A double LP set of reggae Dylan covers. Pretty well performed and recorded.

Now how did I miss that one, I know that I wanted to put on my list but somehow I missed it. Anyway it's a really nice CD filled with mostly mellow reggae versions of many of Dylan's best known songs. Well worth a listen or two.

You can't underestimate Mountain. How did Leslie West play that Gibson SG Junior with gloves on anyway? Of course, "Mississippi Queen" has one of the wickedest cowbell tracks of all time! I'll have to get Masters Of War. Thanks for the great thread.

Brian Ferry also did a masterful cover of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and a pretty quality cover of "Don't Think Twice, Its All Right" on Frantic, but those were the only Dylan cuts on the album. Nice on the European import DVD-Audio.

One of the reasons that I started this thread is that I'm always just a little amazed at how good Dylan's music can sound when "covered" in almost any musical style one can think of. By rights the Jewels & Binoculars jazz covers, the Bryan Ferry quasi-lounge covers and the Mountain heavy metal covers should all be complete jokes but they're not, they are all really good and very interesting, each in their own unique way. That's why the "I'm Not There" set is so much fun. "I'm Not There" includes so many different artists, each with their own unique take on Dylan's material. Sure there are several that play in straight, doing very fateful versions of the original song but there are many others who twist and bend their versions of the song almost to the breaking point and yet the beauty of Dylan's words and melodies still shines through.

There are lots and lots more Dylan cover albums and song out there - any more suggestions anyone?

Edit: Hint - The Grateful Dead, Judy Collins, The Byrds, etc.

I've been self-selected to pursue the project of reviewing, albeit in a very personal way, as many Bob Dylan Cover Albums on VINYL as I can get my hands on. There's several reviews up here: http://alanbumstead.wordpress.com/category/bob-dylan-cover-albums/

The project should be completed in a few months, sometime toward the end of 2011. There'll be about 34 reviews up by then.
