When the going gets tough the tough start posting ads all over the forum. Your vibe, Michael, is Intellectually AWOL. Pathetic. Why are you still here? Have you no respect for Stereophile Forum that allowed you to freely hawk your wares here for two years with impunity? Is it really nexessary to shit all over the forum that gave you this luxury? Have you no shame? Who will stick up for your monkey when you're gone?

Michael thinks you're smart. I don't. I think you're either mildly retarded or suffer from dementia. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The problem with Michael's strategy to use you as his attack dog is that a monkey doesn't make a very good attack dog. You should probably consider curtailing your auto-erotic activities on line.

Actually ChrisS is not a stand up guy. And neither are you. You are a whining know nothing who thinks that posting garbage he finds on the Internet is behavior that is tolerated in normal society. Why don't you go troll on Hydrogen Audio or Audiocircle. You would fit in well there. What are you still doing here?

As with any type of forum that has to do with participation of "doing the hobby", you will find that when the forum goes to speculation only, the threads and forums will go down hill fast. This goes for any forum anywhere. The Stereophile forum has taken a huge hit, because one there is no accountability, two there are no posters dedicated to long term listening threads and three the important threads turn into such bad trolling that the readers can't tell when they are being trolled or involved in truthful, serious discussions.

Until truth and ethics are restored, this forum for the most part is over and will never rise to the level of most seasoned balanced listeners. A balanced listener doesn't have any desires of going backward. Frankly we have moved on to the listening. The only reason I am here is to recruit those who do indeed want to step up their game. But this will not happen on Stereophile as long as the truly higher end "listeners" are allowed to come here without the trolling.

here's what your members say, about your forum

http://tuneland.techno-zone.net/t343-stereophile-the-other-side-of-the-h...

I have got at least 50 emails sitting here that I have not posted to add to the ones that others have sent or posted. If I opened up a call for truth exposed, you my friend would be shocked at the discuss within the hobby concerning this forum. For those listeners and many others it's simply not worth their time anymore, and honestly I don't blame them. When grown adults have no desire to separate the real from the trolls, or are not able to even tell the difference, it's pretty much a dead zone for anyone wishing to be serious.

In all truth, the smartest of all the remaining posters here is ChrisS. ChrisS spends his time solely calling out internet trolls.

I am probably repeating what someone else recommended, but at least that should reinforce my suggestion as a credible one..
In my experience, I noticed if I turn off my system overnight and turn it back on the next day to listen, the quality is noticeably inferior.

I now just leave it on 24x7 and notice no more inconsistencies between listening sessions.

Note: I only leave the main integrated amplifier on..any ancillary equipment I find can be turned off and on without impacting my listening day to day.

Best Regards,

Ron

Ron, I tried your suggestion and it actually did seem to work.

There are a lot of things one can do to improve the sound that ostensibly have nothing to do with the audio system per se. Performing a little good housekeeping will eliminate those mysterious and disconcerting sonic ups and downs as well as improve the sound generally. Gain control over the sound of your system by learning these Good Housekeeping tips. Store all CDs in paper or plastic sleeves as the standard CD jewel boxes act like high frequency resonant cavities. Store all CDs and LPs vertically. Experiment with location of your CD and or LP collection in the room, you should find that some locations sound worse than others. Throw all old newspapers and magazines, TELEPHONE BOOKS, letters, bank statements in the trash. Reduce the number of books by donating them to the library or your local thrift store. Books are bad news for the sound. The objective is REDUCE entropy and REDUCE clutter.

Resolution to the issue? I have to admire the way you kind of slipped that in in there. Of course such a suggestion cannot resolve the issue since as I already pointed out in detail the issue is complex and essentially UNRESOLVABLE. Furthermore, David is apparently unsure as to whether he actually heard it or not. I hate to judge these things too quickly but I'm only going by what he said. I'm watching you (points to my eyes).

OK, while we're waiting for responses let's review the bidding on the OP which I will state, thusly, Why does the sound sometimes change dramatically from day to day for no apparent reason? So far we've explored a few reasons why this might be so including issues related to warming up the the equipment prior to serious listening. That is Ron's suggestion. Here are a few more and I trust I'm not repeating myself. The sound can change depending on whether doors to the room are open or closed since pressure in the room will be different in both cases. Windows open same thing plus windows will tend to vibrate when shut, not so much when open since the pressure is off as it were. Now, Michael I know will probably say let everything vibrate but I disagree. The location for storing CDs and or LPs affects the sound so moving them from one location to another can change the sound. Always store CDs and LPs vertically for best sound. If you have a habit of leaving a lot of recently played CDs lying around on the table then that can certainly degrade the sound. And most audiophiles would probably not be aware of this issue so would think something mysterious was afoot. Empty beer bottles on the floor and table I already covered. When one person listens to the system is the sound different when two or three or more people are sitting or standing around listening? I say yes, if only for the fact that human beings being largely water are acting like some sort of human tube trap and affecting the sound. I won't even get into the psychological implications of having many people in the room during serious listening sessions. Plants and flowers are known to be detrimental to the sound, I suspect most audiophiles believe the opposite is true. Thus, bringing new plants or flowers into the room will uh, hurt the sound. And removing them improves the sound.

Ta at for now,

A few days ago I began to write a story using a hypothetical example in order to illustrate an important point regarding what people register/recognise as “what is significant to affecting sound”. I then began to question as to whether people could understand the point I was attempting to make. I realised that if people had not, themselves, been involved in demonstrating Hi Fi equipment in one Hi Fi show after another, then they would not quite understand the serious point I was attempting to make.

If one had never experienced what actually happens i.e that (say) a group of (say) five friends can arrange to meet up at a Hi Fi show, stop at stalls in the foyer, purchase things, carry those purchases around with them in plastic carrier bags and then go into equipment demonstration rooms as this group of five friends, all still carrying their purchases around with them. They are not aware how much their actions can affect the sound, the people demonstrating their Hi Fi equipment cannot understand why their sound has suddenly got worse when THEY (the demonstrators) have not changed anything.

Then, low and behold, the latest photo from the Stereophile coverage of the CES 2016 show is of many, many people in the queue, actually carrying their purchases etc in plastic carrier bags !!! THIS is what so commonly happens !!!!!!!!!!!

So, I will post my story in three separate parts.

Let me tell you 3 parts of a story with a common link. These are hypothetical stories but anyone who knows me, knows that my hypothetical stories are very, very close to the truth (based on experiences).
We have empirical guy No.1. He says the sentence “Regarding audio and what affects sound, I believe in what makes sense to me logically.”

On the Monday he listens to his Hi Fi and the sound is awful. He describes it as “awful, Opaque, closed down, no detail etc.”

On the Tuesday he listens to his Hi Fi and find the sound SOOOO much better. He describes it as “amazing. Open, transparent, detailed, like a twenty thousand dollar reference system.”

It is the same excellent sound on the Wednesday and also on the Thursday. He is so enamoured by his good sound that he decides, on the Friday morning, to treat himself to some new LPs and new CDs. He chooses some at a store and they are packed for him to carry home in an Orange coloured plastic carrier bag. When he gets home he places this Orange coloured plastic carrier bag with it’s newly purchased disc contents in the listening room, leaning up against a set of shelves, looking forward to having a very relaxing weekend listening to his new disc purchases.

Friday evening he settles down to renew his listening, with the same disc from the previous evening still in the CD player, fully expecting his sound to be as good as the previous Thursday evening. It isn’t. It is back to being worse again !!!!

As far as our empirical guy No. 1 is concerned, nothing has changed, in the listening environment, since the previous evening. He is sitting in his favourite chair, with the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag with it’s contents out of his line of sight. Either he has forgotten that he placed it in the room or he remembers that he placed it in the room but dismisses it as ‘a change’ because he does not regard it as “relevant to audio” !!!! Because, as he says (and believes), “It does not make logical sense that it could affect the sound”.

Empirical guy No. 2. Exactly the same example as before but this time, when empirical guy No. 2 is sitting in his favourite chair on the Friday evening to listen, the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag is in his line of sight. He knows that that is the only change he has made, in his listening environment, since the previous evening, does not believe it could possibly be having any effect on the sound, BUT, on a whim, decides to remove it from the room. When he returns to listening again, now with the Orange coloured plastic bag out of the room, the sound is now SOOO much better, he describes it as “amazing. Open, transparent, detailed, like a twenty thousand dollar reference system.”

He then brings the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag back into the room and listens again. The sound is worse again !!!

This experience he finds soooo weird and surprising that he can’t wait to recount what has happened to his friend – also a fellow audio enthusiast. The friend decides to call round, in order to have a demonstration of what has just been described to him.

Empirical guy No. 3.

Empirical guy No 3 also thinks along the same path as empirical guys No 1 and No 2. However, just before he gets the phone call from empirical guy No 2, empirical guy No 3, having read enthusiastic reports of a particular Nordost ECO 3 liquid, had ordered and just received his supply of such. He had already tried the Nordost ECO 3 liquid on his discs and heard similar improvements in the sound as had been reported by others. So, when he went to visit his friend empirical guy No 2, he took the Nordost ECO 3 liquid with him to demonstrate this to his friend !!

Empirical guy No 2 gave his friend a demonstration of the before, after and back to before experiment with the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag with it’s contents and they both heard the same effect on the sound. Now, purely on a whim, empirical guy No 3 suggested applying some of the Nordost ECO 3 liquid he had brought with him to the surface of the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag – just to see what would happen. Both guys were extremely sceptical but decided – what the hell – why not. They were both surprised to find that, after treatment, the Orange coloured plastic carrier bag could stay in the room without it having SUCH AN ADVERSE effect on the sound !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The basic premise of the story is that all three guys started off with the same empirical belief structure of “It does not make logical sense as being relevant to audio”

Empirical guy No 1 still has that belief because he has not had any experiences which have challenged that belief. But empirical guys No 2 and No 3 now have had the further experiences which empirical guy No 1 has not had !!! Empirical guys No 2 and No 3 can NO longer use the sentence “It does not make logical sense as being relevant to audio”, but empirical guy No 1, who has not had such experiences, and on reading of the other guys experiences, will still say the sentence (and believe it) “It does not make logical sense as being relevant to audio”.

This story is not intended to be critical of anyone. It is purely to illustrate what actually happens and how people can differ in their belief structures through lack of shared experiences. And, therefore, dismiss many of the things being reported as ‘affecting the sound’ because, to them, “It does not make logical sense”.

Going back to the first part of the story. Empirical guy No. 1 described his sound as so much better on the Tuesday but stated that nothing had changed since the previous day. But, it all depends on what he considers as “relevant to audio” as to whether a change would be registered as ‘a change’ or just ignored as ‘not relevant to audio’ and therefore not important to mention as a ‘change’.

Like such as Geoff referring to the possible removal (on the Tuesday morning) of empty glasses and empty beer cans or an empty wine bottle from the night before – but such changes not mentioned because they are not considered as being ‘relevant to audio’.

Regards,
May Belt,
PWB Electronics.
