Do you think the major labels will survive the transition from discs to downloads?

There's been a lot of speculation that the music business as we know it cannot survive the download era, now that artists can sell their music direct to fans. Do you think the major labels will survive the transition from discs to downloads?

Until the major companies go back to selling music (instead of being run by men in grey suits who are only interested in making money), they will gradually have to look to making profits from something else. With the exception of the pop blockbuster market, they are already losing out to the smaller independents in the classical and jazz markets.

Lets hope they die and the quicker the better! They have ripped us off, ripped artists off and shove all this crap down our throats...do they even deserve to survive? I think NOT!

Who is a major record company any more? Most discs come from large numbers of small companies. As soon as we have an easy way of downloading a disc without compression, the small labels stand to gain the most. The Philadephia orchestra are making downloads available In FLAC but it is not straight forward.
