Do I need a pre amp?

I purchased a Marantz SR7013 Receiver thinking it will power my home theater set up. I also want to use it to play my vinyl. I connected my Denon DP-300F turntable but when I played an album the sound is terrible. Do I need a pre amp? Just to see what happens I connected the turntable to the CD connections and it sounds fine. Do I need a pre amp?

The fact that it plays fine

The fact that it plays fine via the CD input tells me that you probably have the "built-in phono equalizer to connect the player to an integrated amp or receiver The DP-300F includes a built-in phono equalizer to connect the player to an integrated amp or receiver that does not have its own phono input." switched ON.
There are two ways to use this TT:
1. With the built-in phono equalizer turned ON and connected to a CD or other line input of your AVR.
2. With the built-in phono equalizer turned OFF and connected to the "Phono" input of your AVR.
You do not need an external phono preamp.
