Personally, I subscribe to Stereophile to read about stereo gear(go figure!) and if I liked ads in the first place, I would like ads from stereo manufacturers. Keep it consistant. Stick to one thing and do it well. I know those other magazines are out there that cater to car lovers and the like, and if that's what I wanted to read about those are the mags I'd subcrtibe to. I'm almost starting to think that this EMAP take-over was just that, a takeover. Let's not prostitute Stereophile just so they (EMAP) can sell a few more magazines, eh?

Whatever helps bring down the cost of Stereophile's subscription/cover price, and enables more reviews of good hi-fi equipment, I think is wise advertising. Just don't let the advertisers determine the content of the reviews, please.

Since my "Stereophile" delivery schedule has become quite erotic the past few months, I frankly don't care. I never know if I wil even receive the mag any more.

Bring 'em on! I love sexy women and beautiful cars as much as I love high-end audio. Where are the wine and booze ads? Think of it this was, increased advertisement revenues should bring about stable subscription rates. Relax. Enjoy!

I don't see why it bothers people. It's not offensive in a moral sense. I'm all for ways for Stereophile to keep my subscription rate down and still pay their writers well.

Stereophile can place any ads they want in their magazine (revenue is revenue), but it is, after all, devoted to audio. If I want to see BMW ads I can pick up a magazine about cars.

At least I know that BMW will not bias the review articles in the magazine, like some other audio manufacturers may attempt to do.

I have been surprised to say the least. I think it is a matter of class and integrity with regards to the kind of readers you want to have. It seems fair to sell space to any one who wants buy it. But as a reader of many years it fells like a sell out. I read the ads as well as the articles and I would very much like the space devoted to hi-fi. It's clear the parent company dosen't give a rat's ass.

bmw huh? no thanks, FHM was small and I don't care, but car adds. car stereo review can't be that far off, go emap. let us know where your heart really lies, not music but dollars.

Why not? I don't understand people who get exercised over BMW ads in Stereophile. Am I upset about Marlboro ads in Car and Driver? Scotch whiskey ads in Architectural Digest? Of course not. If advertisements help keep down the newstand (and subscription) price while providing me with great content . . . then why not?

BMWs are the best, afterall...

Bimmer is OK 'cause it is a premium product but FHM? I'd expect that in trashy tabloids. I guess it means that the magazine is hurting for dollars.

It won't effect my driving style, I have bicycles worth more than my old car.

I don't see what the whole fuss is over this, I own a BMW and think that it is good that they are trying to corner the audiophile market.

BMW?! Such an impecable taste! "What separates the men from the boys is the price of the toys"

dick carney's picture

it's all right, as long as their inclusion dosen't take space from any of the current content

John Beeken's picture

If it helps support thr mag, it's ok by me!

KRB's picture

I don't care about the advertising mix, just don't mess with the content.

I am thinking of not re-newing Stereophile because of the FHM ad. We do not need this stuff in our hi-fi mag.

the qeustion in my mind is how does this relate to audio? the only perk is the influx o' dollas.igeuss we'll be seeing the marlboro man or the guys from geuss jeans next. after all we wouldn't want the honey on fhm's cover to get lonely now ,would we?lol

Andy's picture

I am not 100% for it, but then again if it keeps the magazine going then I will except it. Just as long as it didn't get out of hand.

jim paire's picture

don't care because this subscription will end my 25 years with Stereophile.

Neil Gaus's picture

If it pays for the magazine so I still only have to pay something like $12 for a subscription then it's perfectly fine. To be offended by not having an audio ad in there instead is kind of silly. Is it impossible for some people to live with one or two fewer audio ads? They may argue that it is the principal of the thing, but the magazine needs money to keep our costs down, and a little diversity never hurt anyone. So I think it is very narrow minded and selfish for someone to get offended by a non-audio ad. I also do not like to see the letters section filled with people complaining about how intolerable it is to have a car ad, or to have lower than high-end products in the magazine. So for everyone who works hard to make each Stereophile issue: Keep up the good work.

Today BMW. Tomorrow Kleenex. Please, do not lose sight of who you are, your past, and how you got to be where you are today.

Jim Merrill's picture

I don't care. I'd rather see an audio ad, but I appreciate non-audio advertisers financial support of the mag. After all, Lexus is offering a Mark Levinson sound system in its cars.

Advertising is a way of life..........

Both nice to look at!

Are you that hard up for money? Tell your new publisher your readers don't want this in Stereophile.

TPBrown's picture

Bmw adds are ok as BMW is a high end car and its adds are in good taste! FHM, well J. A. already knows my view about that.

Michael Finnedt's picture

I understand that the magazine has to come up with other revenue sometimes, and BMW or other luxury cars make sense. If some readers can afford $20,000 on a amp, or a pair of speakers then they could afford a luxury car.
