I figured they were going to do this when they started carrying Thiel speakers. One of the complaints I have about being an audiophile is that it' hard to find dealers who carry the stuff you want to audition

Too bad Crutchfield's prices are 60% higher than everyone else's!

With their outrageous prices, I would never buy anything from them; you can always find it for half their price.

The Crutchfield catalog is promoting "Hi-Fi 2.0". Saying that trends towards looks and convenience have robbed folks of good sound over the years, and they want to promote attention to higher quality, less compression, speaker placement, etc. Nice to see that from a company that has helped create and feed the market for the opposite. But never mind, it is a positive thing for them to do. http://www.crutchfield.com/app/Promo/Product/hifi.aspx

+1.

There must be at least 1/2 a dozen places in their latest catalog where they recommend using high bit rates for digital rips. Kudos to them for doing that and helping wean the kids off of 128K MP3.

Yes, their prices are the highest, BUT, since I am not as confident in my abilities with electronics as someone of your impressive pedigree, they offer lifetime support, coddling, goodwill and friendship with each purchase. In 1987 I needed to install a new stereo system in my Mustang (I live in the far No. Cal rainforest). They walked me through the whole process- even sent me the resistors and helped me build crossovers for the component tweeters I installed. They were never huffy, rude or impatient.

Several years later I ventured into multi-channel hi-rez and they answered all my questions about setting up the receiver, which I purchased at 50% off as a refurb.

I've tried dealing with a couple of manufacturers since then about warranty issues and wished I had bought at Crutchfield after getting dicked around and treated like an idiot.

I now find that Music Direct and Audio Advisor are very helpful, but unless you buy the specials they don't give big discounts, either.

A long time ago Crutchfield had a good thing going on prices and service mainly in regard to auto sound. After a while they started making some stupid decision like televisions for example.
