Brodmann and Electrocompaniet

Given that Brodmann Acoustics uses Electrocompaniet components in their design studio, the pairing of Brodmann’s FS ($4500/pair), VC 2 ($19,900/pair) and VC 7 ($24,900/pair) loudspeakers with Electrocompaniet’s AW 180 power amplifier ($5425), EC 4.7 preamplifier ($3499), ECD-2 DAC ($3099, to be reviewed in the December issue by JA), and EMT-3 transport ($3995) was especially felicitous. I’m not sure which speakers I auditioned—probably the big guys—because things got a little crazy when someone from another publication entered the room. When I returned, however, the room was rocking out, and sounded fabulous at high volume. To change genres a bit, note that Salzburg’s famed Festspielhaus uses a custom system based on Brodmann’s unique VC 7 speaker series, which make use of enclosure panel resonances to produce their sound.

I have never heard a speaker that sounded proper that had excessive panel resonance. The sound will not integrate properly due to the flexing of the panels being out of phase and making  a mess with the speaker cone's frequency response.

I have attempted to find the source of my quote, but the literature has already been recycled. Here's hoping that my quote is correct; if not, I apologize to all.

Assuming it is, I would urge you not to absolutely dismiss something you have not heard. After all, Brodmann's custom system is used in the Salzburg Festpielhaus, which attracts one of the most discriminating classical music audiences in the world. I expect that, if the system indeed compromised the sound, the entire Festspielhaus hierarchy would be up in arms, and the system up in smoke. At the least, Brodmann would be reconfiguring its design rather than touting its connection with the Festpielhaus to the extent it does. But maybe I'm far too optimistic.

Jason,

your explanation is precise, I listened twice the small FS (Festival Series) and once the big ones - VC7 (Vienna Classics). The sound of VC7 was unexpected good for the price and the sound of FS was fantastic in small rooms. There is nothing wrong with resonance as long are controlled. The principle is the same as on grand pianos, it's there something wrong?
