beyerdynamic Introduces DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII Headphones
German audio manufacturer beyerdynamic has launched updated versions of its premium studio headphones: the DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII. These models feature the newly developed TESLA.45 driver, designed to improve sound quality and reduce distortion. Priced at $599, both headphones are available now through beyerdynamic's online store and Amazon.
The latest iterations are tailored for modern music production environments, offering an impedance of 30 ohms to ensure compatibility with a wide variety of playback devices. According to the company, this adjustment addresses the shift toward more versatile production setups that blur the lines between traditional studios and home workspaces.
"Flexibility and uncompromised audio quality have become key priorities for professionals and enthusiasts alike," says Andreas Rapp, CEO of beyerdynamic. "Our new models aim to deliver cleaner sound and improved comfort while retaining the qualities that users appreciate."
Technical Enhancements with TESLA.45 Driver
The TESLA.45 driver, created and produced at Beyerdynamic's headquarters in Heilbronn, Germany, is at the heart of the improvements. The driver incorporates a diaphragm intended to minimize distortion and enhance responsiveness, potentially reducing listener fatigue during extended sessions. The membrane uses a PEEK (polyether ether ketone) polymer for bass precision, and a lighter, aluminum-coated copper voice coil is employed to refine treble reproduction.
Each driver undergoes multiple quality checks during production to ensure consistency. The company claims that these technical improvements result in lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and a more balanced treble response compared to previous models.
Design Specifics for Different Applications
The DT 1770 PRO MKII is a closed-back headphone suited for recording, monitoring, and editing tasks. It features adjustments in frequency response aimed at smoothing upper mids and balancing higher frequencies. The closed-back design also serves to suppress ambient noise and minimize sound leakage into microphones.
In contrast, the DT 1990 PRO MKII is an open-back model designed for mixing and mastering. Its design aims to produce a roomy, organic soundstage with precise bass, even at lower frequencies. Per company literature, modifications include a slight reduction in the 8 kHz high-frequency range to help users make precise mixing decisions, while maintaining detailed highs above 10 kHz.
Comfort and Durability Features
Both models incorporate a spring steel headband with memory foam and leatherette materials, designed to alleviate pressure on the top of the head during long sessions. Recognizing that earpads and headbands experience wear over time, beyerdynamic has made these components replaceable to extend the lifespan of the headphones.
The DT 1770 PRO MKII comes with both leatherette and velour earpads, while the DT 1990 PRO MKII includes two types of velour earpads labeled "Producing Velour" and "Mixing & Mastering Velour." These options allow users to tailor the sound profile to their specific needs, whether they are in the creative phase or finalizing a mix.
Accessories and Connectivity
Each headphone is supplied with a 3-meter detachable cable and a 5-meter coiled cable, both featuring a lockable 3-pin mini-XLR connector. A hard case is included for protection during transport. For users requiring direct connection to devices like laptops or smartphones, USB-C cables are available separately.
Availability
The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are currently available for purchase at $599 through beyerdynamic's website and on Amazon.
