Back in 2000, I bought (new) Monsoon MM-1000. They use planar technology found in that company's top-line speakers. That company no longer exists, but they produced some good products.

Check ebay ... you may find a good deal.

The Edifier R980T is very good, and Amazon has them for for $70 for a pair.

You can use any subwoofer with them, and price and quality are all over the place there.

I suggest the Polk Audio PSW-10, which is $80 or so, or maybe much cheaper used.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 with sub if you can find it. Ran $199 new should be able to get a set for half that.
