I am playing with a budget game, and truth be told, if I could get a similar sound from $400 AVR compared to $800+ amp, I'd rather go with the cheaper option.

considering the source material you listen to it won't make any difference whether it's an AVR or separates. I'd go with a Denon AVR, and don't pay more than maybe 600.00. Bluetooth and MP3 and wifi won't "sound better" with expensive separates. They'll just sound the same.
