The NHT site no longer lists the speakers as being in production.
For the price, though, it may really be a cool toy.
Thanks for the answer, Kal. I can see where NHT would want an audiophile to still be able to use his amp - otherwise, they'd probably paradoxically lose sales.
I was imagining a preamp straight to speaker thing!
Quote: RG, you can really just download the upgrades?
See JA's Follow Up.
"The XdA's equalization and filter parameters are held in nonvolatile memory, and can be updated via a USB link using a Windows XP program (provided you have Microsoft's .NET extension installed)."
So if these are the "upgrades" you are referring to then yes I think you should be able to download or have them emailed to you as JA did.

This IS the configuration...preamp > XDA > speakers. I don't think use of your own amp is an option if one is to make use of the equalization and DSP features of the XDA.
Quote: Right. All the amps are buit in and there is no option for using other amps with it.
Kal
OK, where I went wrong...
The review says the satellites are biamped. And the list of reviewing gear included an amp...I was thinking in this case, biamped meant biamped in the sense that the two drivers in the satellites each have an amp. My bad.
Got it!
Semantics got the better of me, I think. Thank you.
That's a pretty cool set up when you then consider you need no amplifiers!
Playsation I, preamp, NHT's - you could be making with the Hi Fi for 3100 bucks!

Thanks for posting the follow up...I suppose now I gotta find a way to get two woofer modules.

Possibilities are endless. Screw the preamp. Squeezebox or Transporter straight in. You may need some in-line attenuators but those are fairly inexpensive.
The system is worth the asking price just as objects d
Thanks for the heads up Brian. I don't recall Kal or JA mentioning the issue. I'm wondering if it affected all units?
Off topic, i couldn't help clicking on the humor link at the referenced site and then on the link for the actual page from Carroll Audio subwoofer manual.
A wonderful bit that perhaps should be included in all high end equipment manuals.
The satellites are bi-amped. The dual-driver subs have separate amps.
Kal
I haven't seen the ad - link?
These are intriguing speakers.
Are the upgrades simply the additional filters they released which should be available through downloads as firmware updates?
RG
My bad, the ad is here:

I emailed NHT but got no reply - I'll try again.

On alternate software clicky
It looks to me the it is a connect the preamp and go: two channels each for the satellites and the sub is self powered.
Tempting toy.

Anyone with Xd might want to have a look here:
http://www.audioconsultingservices.com/
IIRC, the service is run by the former NHT chief engineer. He offers a mod for Xd to address the hiss that some have reported.
No affiliation...I stumbled upon a reference to the site in a big AVS thread covering all things NHT.
