I have recently purchased a HIGHLY modified Hafler DH200 amplifier, just for kicks. It has a new power transformer(not the origional type), circuit board, Cardas copper binding posts, Blackgate capacitors totally throughout (yes, even the big can ones), plus many other extras. I was able to select the upgrades that I wanted.
I was was shocked by what I heard. It is now my amplifier of choice in my system. I could spend thousands more, and I still doubt that it would match this little jewel. I'm now thinking of sending other components for upgrades, something I would have never considered before.
I was wondering about the opinions and experiences of other audiophiles regarding this area. I know it is a scary endeaver and an easy opportunity to get screwed, but I could not be happier with the results. I simply cannot explain how incredible this amplifier sounds, and it is not even completely broken in.
