The audiophile Rosetta Stone? From the December issue, Kalman Rubinson goes looking for the perfect all-purpose audio player as he reviews the Linn Unidisk 1.1 universal disc player. As KR notes, "Even more important than comprehensive compatibility will be any truly universal player's ability to optimally play back all of these formats without robbing Peter to pay Paul."

For his first Krell review in 17 years, Michael Fremer hits play on the Krell SACD Standard multichannel SACD player to see what it's got. MF first comments, "Despite its relatively modest price of $4000, Krell's SACD Standard has absorbed technology and build quality that Krell pioneered in its far more expensive products." And then he heard the sound.

Also from the December issue, John Atkinson gets his hands on the Sony SCD-XA9000ES SACD player. JA details his findings about Sony's third generation flagship multichannel SACD machine, this time sporting a FireWire digital output!

Finally, this week's installment in our "Recording of the Month" series for the online archives, Recording of March 1993: Dry. Richard Lehnert notes, "Even when I understand the words I sometimes think I'm listening to a foreign language—perhaps because I'm a 42-year-old man, and Harvey, who's young enough to be my daughter, sings in the strongest, most uncompromisedly female voice I've ever heard."
