I'm currently in post-production on a 16mm short film, and our sound mixer is preparing 5.1 and mono mixes. 16mm film prints only allow for a mono track, but I'm wondering if I can use SMPTE timecode to play the 5.1 mix along with the film print?

My plan was to put SMPTE onto the optical track of the 16mm print, then run an audio cable from the projector to some sort of setup that can play the digital 5.1 mix in sync with the film print.

What kind of a setup would I need to make this happen? I don't have a ton of experience with audio equipment, so not sure where to start.
