You may want to check out Michale Green's Tuneland. That group is focused on room alterations to optimize sound and others have gone through new construction.

Under the Description, read all of the detail in the Construction section. (The guy even states the R-values of the insulation he uses!)

Also, read the sections on Acoustic Panels...

There are several Prime concepts to keep in mind.
First you want to pick a room that has decent potential.
My choice would be a nice convivial room with a view or a fireplace or SOMETHING to look at while you are getting intoxicated by your HiFi.
A room that your family will feel "invited" to come into.
NOT a man cave!
Decent proportions help.
Next---Get "Get Better Sound" by Jim Smith to figure out the MECHANICS of which rooms have potential and so forth.
THEN consider how much "acoustical treatment" you and your significant other can tolerate in the form of Sonex, draperies, furniture that absorbs, etc."
Start THINKING about how the sound will be created from your speakers.
Remember that the explosion of sound will be similar to jumping into a swimming pool and setting up some massive splash waves into that room.
How will they splash?
WHERE will they splash?
How close to walls will your speakers be and will they have a ton of second reflections or not, etc etc.
Once you have a basic idea of what you are up against then you put your speakers out there and start MOVING THEM.
You are looking for a MAGICAL spot where the speakers excite GOOD vibrations that sound like REAL LIFE.
I once spent FIVE YEARS moving speakers around in a room that was OK but maybe a bit too reverberent...
After all that work I got closer and closer to NIRVANA.
The improvement from moving my speaker arrays a half inch at a time was PHENOMINAL.
When I was DONE and was SURE there was no better place to put the speakers it sounded like real life musicians were IN THE ROOM PLAYING REAL INSTRUMENTS.
I invited a friend over who was skeptical.
"I will move one speaker an inch out of place and the whole mirage will collapse" I told him.
"Impossible but I will LISTEN," he answered.
"Oh my God that sounds REAL like the opera singer is RIGHT THERE and I can touch him!" he exclaimed.
Then I moved one main speaker an inch out of place.
"Oh NO! Everything got blurry!" he exclaimed.
So.....
Get "Get Better Sound" by Jim Smith.
And the Yamaha Pro Sound System Setup Manual for professional PA guys.
And buy any other acoustic tomes you can find so the subject is no longer FOREIGN to you.
THEN once the room has promise start busting your hump MOVING your speakers to see what sounds MORE ALIVE.
When you are done I will bet you find out that THIS is the magic bullet you have been looking for.
You need to have GOOD equipment for this to work.
You may find AFTER you are done that some of your equipment is less than stellar and needs to be a little bit better.
But you will be AMAZED how much of a big deal the SETUP and the ROOM are to your accomplishment.
