The Focal, is a serious loudspeaker that requires a strong supporting cast of gear and cables/cords.

Monitor Audio is a good all-around speaker. Dynaudio is over-priced for the performance.

Have not auditioned the ProAc nor Dali.

Thank you Allen

I can understand that the tweeter on the Focal must be reigned in and partnered correctly.

I will check to see where I can audition the speakers.....

In terms of electronics I am thinking either
1. norma audio
2. simaudio the neo series
3. densen
4. musical fidelity

thanks again

hifi:

I can, with certainty, fully recommend the Musical Fidelity M6si Integrated Amp, or it's sister, the M6PRX Amplifier if you are not in need of an integrated. It is a very recently released upgrade of their previously award winning M6i integrated. Note: it's sister, the AMP-ONLY M6PRX received an A grading here on Stereophile; here is the excerpt:

"Musical Fidelity M6PRX: $3495 $$$
This dual-mono, class-A/B design is rated to deliver 260Wpc into 8 ohms from four pairs of bipolar output transistors per channel, using circuitry based on Musical Fidelity's flagship Titan. Much more modest in size and appearance than the massive Titan, the M6PRX measures 17.5" W by 5" H by 15.5" D, offers balanced and single-ended inputs, has choke-regulated power supplies, and comes in a choice of silver or black faceplate. "This is one of the sweetest-sounding, most fatigue-free solid-state amplifiers I have met up with," said Sam. His solid-state reference. (Vol.35 No.6)"

Dual-Mono...Class A/B.... A Grade on Stereophile... their labs measured 260 Watts per channel @ 8Ohm... need I say anymore?

Best Regards,

Ron

Allen:

I'm not the OP... however, your reply is interesting..

I have not owned nor auditioned Focal speakers; however, on a philosophical level, wouldn't an A graded and universally praised AMP or Integrated as the Musical Fidelity 6 series be a very worthy contender and good recommendation?

I appreciate a particular speaker may be quirky ....but one would think the sonic prowess of the amp I'm alluding to would address it?

Respectfully,

Ron

IMO the problem does not lie with the speakers, which are excellent!

You need an amplifier that sounds better; the Roksan, in my experience, is not one of the better amplifiers in its class.

The amplifier I use is the Musical Fidelity M6PRX, which is excellent, but it is only a power amplifier and you would need to spend several thousand dollars for the amp and that much more for the preamp (my preamp cost $6000).

My amplifier recommendation would be the Arcam A28 integrated, which I think is available for around $2000.

Another good choice would be the Creek EVO 100, which also runs around the same price.

The Musical Fidelity M6 Integrated is excellent, but around $6000.

I have no opinion on the list of speakers you provided, not a level I listen too all that frequently. What I do know is that you need to audition those in your home. It is unreasonable to spend that kind of money without that equipment in your home. Once you find the speakers, then choose the right equipment to power it.

I decided to check out reviews on those RX8s. WhatHiFi had an interesting perspective. They described it as having "flabby bass." Is that the issue you are facing? I have listened to the RX6s and found them to be awesome But have never heard the RX8. I will say I like the way the Roksan K2 sounds. At one point it was the class leader, but other units seemed to have passed it by. It deffinitely lacks the detail and crispness of newer units. A more detailed, crisper integrated with a bit more power may help. That being said, if uncontrolled bass is the issue, that sounds like a signature of the speaker and an improved amp may not be enough to offset that.

Other note, really like that Pioneer N-50. Awesome unit for the money.

Thank you all for your suggestions....

I am happy with the RX8s because I believe they are the right size for the room (not that a UK flat is big) because of the height of the ceiling. The RX8 has a lot of bass at moments sometimes too much but all in all it was the best speaker I auditioned at the time against B&W and KEF.

I believe that a power/pre combo such as a Musical Fidelity M6PRX and PRE will be the way to go. Having said that and done that I am sure that changing the speakers will be by far the biggest fundamental change to the sound.

The MF gear is reasonably priced and being in the UK support should be better than most exotic gear.

I do admit that on paper reviews did influence me a lot and the difficulty of arranging demos at dealers made me rush into buying the amp. But the speakers I did listen to. Also you do get what you pay for and the speakers were too ambitious let's say for the price.

For example and ex-demo MA gold speaker would have been better.....

The Pioneer N-50 is awesome and I got that half price which is just about right. I stream the music from a Mac via airplay but also run a DLNA server which the Pioneer can also handle. I cannot comment on its USB playback.

Thank you

You may also use MDF cover to caver your speakers. MDF is widely used material for speaker due to its medium density. To know more about speakers cover, visit here.
