In Casablanca, standing in Rick's Cafe Americain, Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains) of the local police blows his whistle and announces, "This cafe is closed until further notice. Everyone is to leave here immediately. Clear the room at once!"
The propietor Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) angrily asks, "How can you close me up? On what grounds?"
Renault replies, "I am shocked. ...shocked! ...to find that gambling is going on in here."
Rick says nothing in reply, only glares back with disgust as he moves away from Renault.
As Rick moves away from Renault, Emil (Marcel Dalio) the croupier at Rick's approaches Renault saying, "Your winnings, Sir", while handing Renault a fistful of currency.
Renault quickly replies to Emil in a kind voice, "Oh...Thank you very much", while stuffing the thick wad of bills into a pocket in his trousers. And, without missing a beat takes one step forward toward Rick's customers, and away from Rick and Emil, and with raised voice says, "Everybody out at once!"
