Thanks for the reply, Bill. Were you saying that you'd go for the Pro-ject instead of the AT or Denon, or that the Technics will never sound as good as the Pro-ject, even with a $300 cartridge?

Yes and yes.

With one qualifier:  if you do find a P-mount cartridge for your Technics that is $300 in price and quality, it might sound as good as a new Pro-ject.  OTOH, the Pro-Ject Debut III comes with an adequate cartridge already included and mounted, and the turntable is of good enough quality that you can upgrade cartridges if you want, from the wide selection of brands and prices, that are universal/standard mount.

The Technics was never very good IMO, and with age it has not gotten any better. Any money you put into it is money down a rat-hole, if you ask me.

The Project Debut or the Music Hall MMF-2.2 are far far better turntables in every way. They are good enough that you could spend $300 on a better cartridge later on and the money would be well spent.

I use what might be a $10 Goodwill turntable that also takes P-mount cartridges. If you are planning serious upgrades to your current table, probably smart to dump it instead and get one with standard cartridge mounting. That said, I put an nos P-mount Digitrak SE in mine and the table sounds pretty darn good for what it is. Unfortunately the price of the Digitac's keep going up, about $50 since I bought mine a year and a half ago. It sounds way better than the Grado Green my dealer sold me. Maybe I don't like Grado sound, but it sounded dark and lifeless to me. I'd buy another Digitrac before they run out, but it's not as good a bargain as a couple years ago when they were going for $100.

Here's the info.  https://www.turntableneedles.com/mobile/product.asp?itemid=2826

Depends on your table's inherent noise, and arm quality, but if you are going for real quality down the line, a standard mount arm/table is probably the way to go.

I don't know , myself I have a Technics TT with a P mount cartridge which has sounded great since the late 80's when I bought it . Find a good AT  P mount cartridge, they work very well with the Technics and can be had for less than $100 .  If you don't like the sound with the new cartridge then you can move on to something else. Also the Technics is a semi auto table where there are very few good semi auto tables built these days , everything is all manual so it will not stop at the end of the record . Some people it may not bother but it bugs the heck out of me if you happen to leave the room for some reason .
