If you want a pair of powered speakers that are very good-sounding, the Audioengine A2 are hard to beat.
There are websites/forums dedicated to car audio, but that does not get much discussion here.
Bose makes grossly overpriced systems that sound like crap IMO. If it says Bose on it, avoid it like the Black Plague.
For a good sound system to use with your TV at home, I would suggest the following:
-A Harman-Kardon 3490 stereo receiver (Around $300-350)
-A pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.2 speakers ($450)
1 A polk PSW505 subwoofer (around $200-230)
Be careful about "blaring" loud music with headphones. A year or two of that can result in severely damaged hearing that will cause you to suffer for the rest of your life. It happens to a lot of people, and there is no cure once you have damaged yourself.
Don't worry, I don't actually blare music, I just keep it pretty loud, three notches or four from the top on the ipod. Anyway, thanks for the Bose heads up, I truly didn't even know, and, that home system does sound pretty good after I looked it up.
the Grado SR325is is hard to beat at $300. However, they are open back so anyone sitting next to you may hear them.
for under $200 speakers for laptop or cell phone I second the recommendation for AudioEngine 2.
For headphones under $500 check out the wall of fame on sister site innerfidelity.com. That includes Sennheiser HD600's or 650's or Momentum, or Philips Fidelio X1, and others, laid out in categories (open, closed, full size, compact, etc). Although Tyll at innerfidelity is not a fan of Grados generally, they are good too and I enjoy my budget priced ones.
