I would strongly recommend the Sanus Steel Foundations Mark 4 speaker stands. They are very reasonably priced at less than $150. They come with adjustable spikes and also feet for finished wood floors. Audio Advisor in Michigan sells them online or by phone. Many comparable ones cost hundreds more.

The main things you need are strength, rigidity, and mass in a speaker stand, and most of the cheaper ones on the market are sadly deficient in all of these areas.

It also helps a LOT if the center column can be filled with steel shot for mass and damping (steel shot is avaiable in bags online or from large sporting goods retailers; used for reloading shotgun shells). These have that feature.

Sand can also be used, but steel shot is better.

Thank you for the suggestion commsysman, I'll look up the sanus stands, so far they have good reviews.

Best,
