What speakers for Jazz

A bunch of years ago I walked into my favorite audio shop and was immediately greeted with some great music that featured horns . I don't recall the disc but what I heard was the most realistic reproduction of a Saxophone I had experienced to date . Needles to say I purchased the speakers forth with , they were the original Revel Salons . Still have them , haven't heard anything to surpass them with Jazz yet .

Vandersteen

I usually don't think of speakers as being better on one type than another since the speaker should sound good on ALL types of music. That being said I have a pair of Vandersteen Model 3A Signatures with one Vandersteen Model 2WQ subwoofer which, needless to say, sound grreat playing jazz or any other type of music.

I have a pair of Aeon I's that I love me some jazz on! Very transparent and great at low volume as well. The best speaker I've had in this room and the first I've had that I'm content with.

All types of music

Good point Jazzfan and good speakers as well , I've heard the 3A-S's many times at a friends , he use's a pair of Rel B1's with his , although there not really needed . What inspired this tread was several reviews in our favorite mag that referred to speakers and how they were great for Rock , Classical music ect . When I threw this around at an audio club meeting , non of the members were willing to say that there speakers were great with every type of music . Even the lucky guys and girl with speakers of historical significance , Sonus Faber Strads , Burmester B100's , Focal Maestro's , a few pairs of Revel Salon's both the original and the second gen's , we all seemed to have a preference as to what type of music are speakers were best at reproducing . RGibran makes a good point as usual , " the first he's content with " I guess that's all that really matters , till you hear something better .

Time Windows

Way back when I was a mere lad and a budding audiophile the first pair of non-mass market speakers that I owned were DCM Time Windows. While they were not the last word on bass did they do one type of music better than almost any other speakers I've since encountered: classical guitar. Go figure.

Dual midrange drivers

Personally, it has been my experience that loudspeakers equipped with dual midrange drivers reproduce jazz music best. If you got the coin, check out the Avalon's.

Just got some Paradigm Studio 20 v .5's and Cardas Clear speaker cables for the third ( garage system ). Thanks Bob Reina for helping me make up my mind on the speakers , had it narrowed down to three pairs after long listening session's , but Bobs great review in the May 2012 issue confirmed my thoughts on them . His sonic description was accurate .

They seem to be quite good for Jazz and small on ensembles , very uncongested . Tryed a few different amps and ended up driving them with my retired Luxman amp , seems to be a great match .

Well the garage system is pretty humble . For a source I use a Shaw cable box and an I-Pod . Cambridge 650A Azur is being used as a preamp and a Luxman Mi77 power amp , one dedicated 20 amp 12 gauge circuit , Cardas Clear speaker cables , Shunyada Python power cords and Madrigal interconnects . It's not much but it's home .

Oh , forgot to mention there's a beer fridge .

Beer cords

Actually , all kidding aside , most jazz musicians prefer the raspy taste of beer out of a Shunyada powered fridge , yet Cellists seem to go for the smoother , warmer flavor of a light lager when it's been massaged by George Cardas and company .

I'm not as high end as some people on here, but - I found a set of old Bose 901's in a pawnshop - the old heavy walnut/wood ones. And when listening to the Bill Evans Trio, all I can say is that the acoustic bass was IN THE ROOM with me! Amazing for jazz.

Yes, daskren. We can never discount the 901's. The only caveat w. this BOSE speaker, is that, each speaker requires
8 feet of wall space per speaker (16 ft total) to really "open" up.

Vandersteen

As a rookie, I looking to you vets for some advice. After doing some homework, I landed a pair of Vandersteen 1b's as seemed like a great fit for jazz. I'm driving them with a Yahama CA800 in a 15'x25' room. The sound quiality is very under wellming at low and mid volume. Not sure if it's the amp, speaker set-up, cables or expectations.
Any thoughts?
