You can upgrade it by replacing the stylus with a OM10, 20, 30, or 40 stylus instead of replacing the whole cartridge. That Denon receiver has a phono input so it should get you by for a while. The Pioneer home theater floorstanders or bookshelves are speakers that are real overachievers.

You can get a pair of Polk Monitor 40 speakers for under $200; they deliver a lot of sound for the buck.

One problem with HT recivers is that they often are underpowered for operating 5 speakers, which is what they are advertised for. If you just use the receiver to run two speakers, it should work fairly well.

Another very good low-priced turntable is the Music Hall MMF-2.2.

Hey all, my first post here. I have been doing some reading here and elsewhere but need some advice.

I am new to the world of vinyl, and want to get something half decent sounding without spending an arm and a leg. Being into cycling (and off and on headphones) I know 'decent' is all relative, and an 'arm and a leg' is a wide array of numbers. I want a system that will let me enjoy vinyl (being able to tell the difference from digital), while I am not overly concerned with things sounding perfect.

As for the table, I was looking at the pro-ject debut carbon, or perhaps the debut iii with an upgraded cartidge (as I can get the iii a fair amount cheaper than the carbon).

Reciever/amp I have an older denon AVR - 1804 receiver that is what I am hoping to use, as I already have it, and its getting no use. I read a small bit about how HT systems are somethign to stray away from. but I wanted thoughts on that.

Speaker-wise I was looking for bookshelf speakers, something decent to start with (sub $200), with the thought that if I really get into vinyl I can upgrade. I was thinking some used paradigm which seem relatively cheap

I am not a die-hard vinyl fan, it does sound better, and i enjoy the 'ritual' of putting on a record. At the end of the day, however, I just want something to play the records I have sitting in my living room.

What are your thoughts on the direction I am going in. Thanks
