I, along with everyone I've seen discuss this site on all forums I visit, think you should go back to the way the site was. The format of this new site is terrible. I would change everything back.

Hello, my username is jimryl. I have an ad on your site for a PS AUDIO POWER PUNCH AC cord. It is not listed on your site and under my page it has been marked as sold and the ad is marked as expired. I had contacted you several days ago that the sell did not work out because the potential buyer did not respond with payment. You put my ad back up and everything was cool until you updated your site. My ad hasn't been on your site for several days and I might have missed out on a potential sale. How do I get my ad back up. Thank you, Jim

It appears that there is no link to a seller's feedback as there used to be. The total number of comments and feedback scores are given but no link to the comments. That should be added back in.

I liked the old advanced search, including the ability to search by user specified price range (e.g. $1000 to $1500), by zip code (including 01, e.g. to get a local area) and by Country (e.g. Switzerland). Can you add the advanced search back in?

Hi, I know you still have adjustments to your new format but after using it a few times, I'm not sure you are headed in the correct direction. Your new site is just like Gmail so Goggle is the author. My reaction is that it isn't as good or as friendly as the old format plus it takes longer to load. It also includes older items along with the fresh so when you choose on "newly listed" you get both. Remember if it ain't broke don't fix it!" Jihley

I am in mourning for Audiogon You destroyed a perfectly working web site which offered folks of the stereo persuasion a place to go. You have whored your sole to make money by pop-up... .You used to be the place to be. Now you are trying to become a cheap knockoff of E-bay. Shame on you for losing any semblance of integrity. The format is terrible, the font is too small and it is difficult to read. Thumbs down

Like the new website, but one thing I used to like to do was search for things in my area. The previous advanced search was crude, but at least it was there. I don't see Advanced Search in the current version at all. If you do bring it back, I would like to see an additional feature, the ability to do "and" operations between search categories like; zipcode like '33%' and category = 'speaker' and description like '%kef%' Of course you would build the select string from user input.

Nice work on most aspects of the redesign. Couple questions: Are the images on the list pages really gone now? IMO, they were better than the titles for easy scanning. Also, looks like there are only clickable thumbnails on the individual listing pages now? Why not show the first photo larger as you did before? Now the user must click again to see a photo of any meaningful size, which is cumbersome. Are these images gone now to decrease load times? If so, I wish you had chosen text ads instead of display ads to keep load times low. In my experience, product images are essential to online shoppers, and the larger, the better. :).

new font is easier to read. click on zip code to find where it is missing. separate music, auctions, classifieds. missing auction ending today. time remaining for classifieds of minimal value; replacing w/item type far better use of space

A search by manufacturer returns matches in both the item line and the text in the body.of the ad. The new site separates them, but the text results make refining the search using the left hand options or sorting by price or by date useless. The text matches get mixed in with the item matches. Solution : next to the search box, include a check box to include text items. The default should be no, which would just search on the item values. If you click the text box, then both item and text matches will show up in the search results.. Since you currently separate the item and text matches, I bet the logic is already there to do this.

Guys, lets be real. The old site was straight out of the 80's. How can anyone honestly say they "loved" that site? NOBODY surfing the web today can say that. Compared to the new one, maybe. But on it's own, give me a break. On the topic of the new one, Agon staff inboxes are obviously overflowing with hate, but also some real and worthwhile feedback. Agon, we hope/assume you are reading and internalizing how to go about making some of these changes. Good luck. PS I don't really care for the new site layout either, but am patient to see how this fleshes out... thanks Tholt

When sorting a list of items, the sort is done by strick ASCII codes, so lower case entries are at the end of the list. The sort should be case independent. Otherwise you miss entries for a given manufacturer unless you go to the end of the list. Of course, before this really works, there needs to be a way to not include the text part of the post in the search. Incidently, I like that you can search on the text in addition to the item, but that should be an option. For example, I like to be able to search both item and text for 230V, but not when I am searching by manufacturer.

The above comments hit all my issues. The designers of the new site clearly are not actual users. There is no conceivable reason to have left out display by "category" and the ability to view users' feedback within a listing. Audiogon is no longer easy and fun to use. Back to eBay for the time being.

I am not doubting that the new site layout and it's quirks are annoying (but I would hardly say worse than Ebay! That site is a a clusterf***) but I and I think many users have been wanting enhancements for a long time. The need for better filtration of ads and forum posts, better search capability, etc. There are a TON of useful, relatively easy upgrades that could have been implemented via jquery, etc that Audiogon could have done. Unfortunately, they didn't. Perhaps their database is so outdated it is hard for them to update it's core functions. Who knows

I would like to see it added back as as option. One of the things I search on is 230V and that information is is often in the text. A simple check box to include the item text in the search should be pretty easy to implement.

I whole heartedly agree! The site worked, it was user friendly, and did the job. Now I am not getting any email with regarding to interest in my offerings. That gives me a clear moment of pause as to whether or not I want to continue my long term membership with AudiogoN. Again..., everyone and I mean everyone I spoken to say this was a mistake! The new people (and I heard there is new management) at AudiogoN are CLEARLY out of touch with their members. Remember most audiophiles are between the ages of 30-75, professional, conservative, and VERY old school. I mean come on we are still listening to two channel and vinyl and loving it. You want to spruce up the site, then create one for the MP3 crowd but not us! IN the end, we will move on to other sites and AudiogoN will lose. I clearly hope THAT will not happen and the new management LISTENS (can I say this loud enough!) to its members. Remember it IS AudiogoN who is serving it members not the other way around. FYI: The site NEVER looked like the eighties. It was founded in 1998 and that is 18 years past the eighies! For what is its worth, I have been a member since 1999 (almost since the beginning) and I have always been happy (other than the increase in cost to run ads, which I time I understood) with AudiogoN. YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING KIDS, If it ain't broke then DON'T fix it. Take heed to these very wise words. This coming from a 51 year old fuddy duddy--aka blissaudio.

The Time Left in a Classified ad is the LAST thing I care about in a listing! Not me. I want to know when something is ending to know if I have a better shot of dealing. I also like knowing if something is newly listed. The wasted space IMO is the Classified vs Auction column. With the ability to filter out either with the checkboxes in the upper left, and w/90% of ads being Classifieds, to me that column is totally useless and distracting in it's graphical treatment.

I agree. There should be an advanced search function with myriad possibilities. Clearly, the site should be built around this notion. As it stands, it's somewhat of an afterthought—at least in its execution.

Good morning. I see various posting about being able to filter by zip code. In the new version is this function no longer active? This filter was a huge benefit when looking for speakers and turntables that are difficult to ship. Where would I find that search by location (zip code) function?

This is not a comment just to blissaudio but in general to Audiogon and its members regarding the new site. I have been watching and reading most of the suggestions and comments made, so I am pretty well informed about everything. First: the idea of replacing the old site by a new one was wrong and unjustifiable from start. Second: the new site is unnecessarily complicated and complex. Third: the Audiogon either failed to properly instruct the designer about its concept, presentation, functionality and practicability issues or the designer is unskilled, amateurish and the realization of such site is a too complex, complicated and difficult job for them. Fourth: it seems to me that even accepting the new site, against the better judgment of its members, the Audiogon failed so far to consider and implement all positive and necessary suggestions made by its members so that to have a fully operational site. I personally don't know presently which suggestion or proposal made by any of its members was considered and implemented in the new site since Audiogon failed to inform its members about such issue or case by case. Any website must be fully functional, practical, easy to use and satisfy the requirements of its members. So far the new Audiogon site falls short on all these criteria. Under the circumstances, I believe that is a must for Audiogon to replace the new site with the old one that could be expanded or improved in some areas (such as for various searches) if necessary or Audiogon must consider and apply all justified and positive suggestions made by its members for the new site. Either way, Audiogon should decide on one of these two options as soon as possible. In the last week, I was not able to relist or list any new ad for records LP in the new site because at the checkout I supposed to pay a $4 listing fee that I shouldn't be charged since this fee applies only for audio equipment ads and not for media software. I contacted Audiogon three times in this matter, asking them to fix this issue with no result so far. What kind of cooperation is this between Audiogon and its members if nothing can be done in a positive and expeditious way? This is an issue that could be fixed by designer in 10-15 minutes the most, but was not so far. I cannot list LPs in Audiogon, nor Audiogon can make money. I also made several other suggestions for the new site, none considered so far although they are totally justified and necessary. All I received in response was something like that : "we're working on this" or "be patient". In conclusion, I believe that there are three issues and actors involved in all this that must play their part to the best of their abilities, compromise and reach an agreement on all important issues, as follows: Audiogon, the designer, the Audiogon's members. So far, it seems to me that only the Audiogon members have tried hard to do their best, assist and help, the other two interested parties being behind in everything: acceptance of facts, timing, necessity of changes submitted, their implementation in an expeditious way. Since I believe that the new site is not going to work properly (I have this obsessive hunch I have to admit), the only viable thing left to be done by Audiogon, and this as soon as possible, is to reinstate the old site then start working on improving it as a compromise. Thank you for your time and consideration, Emil_anghel

Has Audiogon been sold to some faceless non-Audiophile holding company? Just wondering because the last time I witnessed such ignorance, that was what had happened.

Ryancommented on Site Launch Begins Today, January 5th.

in response to Greg:

Hello, I’m not sure if you intend to change the website format permanently or not, but I strongly suggest that you do not. Part of what makes Audiogon so appealing is its simplicity, that it is NOT like Ebay. Additionally, the old site runs easily and quickly on any machine I access it with, whereas [...]

Yes! Craigslist works, why change it? Audiogon worked, why change it this dramatically? This format is not any better looking. It still looks dated, so if modern was what they were hoping for they better go find another web designer because they got hosed. I liked the simplicity and speed with which I could find what I wanted on Audiogon. Now there's neither. Also, if you're moving to an ad-suported design I'm guessing you'll also be lowering the listing and sale fees for all of your users who have to put up with this new design?

in response to audiogon:

Thank you very much for your feedback. We’re working to add many improvements to the website, thank you for your patience.

This is all very hopeful and we certainly hope you can get audiogon functioning again, but shouldn't you have added the improvements before rolling out the new site? There's not one thing that works better for the end user with the new changes, and isn't that what these changes should be about? What's up with the ugly banner ads from 1996 that take the top 2 inches of my display? Easy enough to disable on this end (and, seriously, can we have some class in the ads on a high-end audio web site???!) but if I were just browsing around onto your site I'd think it was a joke with things like this. Instead of useless banner trash, how about giving the option to members selling things to fill those spaces instead of ads from companies none of us will ever click on? And put the banner ad into the header or on the side instead of above it so you're not wasting 2" of space and pushing all of the stuff we're actually looking at further down.

What we’re working on

by audiogon

Note: Please try not to post customer support questions as comments on the blog.  Please go to http://support.audiogon.comfor help.  Also we please ask to only send us one request as it slows down or response time if you email us multiple times.

We've received roughly 500 comments since we launched the new site and we're working through many of your requests, please understand that we are listening and working to get the site up to our users standards.  Here are some of the things we've both worked and are working on:

What we updated yesterday:

  • Zip Code Search: You can now search by zip code by  and we're actively working on rolling out zip code by radius
  • Music listings are now separated from equipment
  • Search only includes listing titles: We are considering adding description back into search as a checkbox option as many of you are also requesting this.
  • Feedback is now visible on listings:  Links to feedback have been restored and your scores should be showing correctly
  • Email Fixes: Email notices should not contain any bad characters and we've increased deliverability.
  • Site Speed: We've completed a number of speed improvements and are working on more.

Here are some notes regarding the new site:

  • Problems with Listings: if you have problems with your listings, please go to http://support.audiogon.com and try to find your answer there. If you're still experience problems, please email us but please understand we're dealing with a large number of requests and give us 24-48 hrs to respond.
  • Buy it now, Offer and Bid buttons not being visible on your own listings:  Sellers cannot see these buttons on their own listings only potential buyers, this is to prevent fraudulent activity.
  • Listing Management: To manage your listing and see open offers, questions or orders just make sure your logged in and go to the listing page from your selling table on MyPage home
  • Editing Listings:  We're working on cleaning up editing, for now please use the amending option on your listing.

Thanks to our community for all their patience over the last few days.

Didn't want this to get lost in my reply to another post here -- I really miss the thumbnails. There is no substitute, certainly not lines of text. I was trying to think of why this new layout bugged me so much -- that is one huge reason. It's just not fun to look at the classifieds anymore.

Nice work on most aspects of the redesign. Couple questions: Are the images on the list pages really gone now? IMO, they were better than the titles for easy scanning. Also, looks like there are only clickable thumbnails on the individual listing pages now? Why not show the first photo larger as you did before? [...]

Totally Agree. A pic is worth 1000 words. Didn't realize how much info a thumbnail gave me instantly and with no work, not to mention visually superior to words. Bring back the thumbs!!

I am curious if AudioGon is owned and operated by the government. As it seems to fit the govenrment motto "If it ain't broke, fix it till it is!" How much money have you spent to take a site that was user-freindly into a site that is user-repellent. Please tell me you have a a reason for these changes.

Improvements? Very hard to see or even envision at this point. One can anticipate some rather interesting comminications coming down the pike once the exhibitors and vendors and attendees from the CES and THE show return home and try to conduct business! Please consider taking the improvements back and plugging in the old site that worked and where commerce and community flourished so well!

Where are the advanced search functions? In particular, I can’t seem to find the new way to search listings by zip code. I also preferred the old method of listing ads in order by product type after a search was made. With the new way it is much harder to make sense of what everything [...]

Where are ANY search functions that work (except those that lead to huge unorganized lists of stuff one could not possibly be interested in all of) at all? I cannot find ANY search window ANYWHERE on ANY page. And All bookmrks are gone and there isn't even a category called bookmarks on My Page! What a waste of effort and member goodwill!

New post on Audiogon Updates

We’re Listening 1st Week Updates

by audiogon

Audiogon Community:

It’s been a few day’s now since we launched the new Audiogon and we hope you are enjoying it!  We have heard back from many of you letting us know how much you like the new site and what areas also need more work.

We intend to have ongoing improvements to the Audiogon website.  Your input is invaluable since we consider our membership feedback as our most powerful guide in moving forward.

We are currently working on and planning to roll out in the next few days and weeks, Editing capabilities for your listing, Want Ads, Auctions, and much more.  We are listening and know you have asked for more work on, site search capabilities, member look-up, zip code by radius, color improvements, larger fonts and fraud protection.

Many of you have asked WHY did we update the site?

The main reasons we updated the site was to bring you New Features, Increased Security and Increased Capacity to support our growing community.  For the past 14 years Audiogon members have asked for dozens of new features and additional functionality.  The computer language that our original site was written, forgoes any opportunity to make changes easily.  Thus we have embarked on a journey to start fresh with a dynamic and comprehensive overhaul for Audiogon.  Our goal is to be responsive to this wonderful audiophile community and provide state of the art solutions to what we all want this site to become.

Although we have spent months working with select members to test and tweek the new site, we realize some of you are still having challenges. Please be patient with us as we are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.  If you are still experiencing difficulties you may contact us at http://support.audiogon.com.  We currently have a backlog of open issues and we are working to resolve them.  So that we may better assist you we ask that you provide us with your User Name, email address, and as much detail as possible regarding your issue.

Once again your loyalty and support is greatly appreciated and we will continue working hard to enhance the site in 2012 and beyond.

I don't know how long it will last, but it's good to read what the members think and confirm what I suspected. It's a disaster as usual.

I much prefer Audiogon over Ebay and hope they can get their act together. But, there's a real opportunity for someone to step up and take Audiogon's place...especially if they dig in their heels and fail to make an obvious business decision.

This concludes (for now) my posting of copies of AudiogoN blog comments which I have received via WordPress. Please see my explanation for loading these comments on this web site forum in my posting just prior to "AudiogoN Member Comment #1". I have posted 128 blog comments and the keen eye will catch that I made a few mistakes. I numbered two of the comments #80, I neglected to add the proper subject line @ 101 and I posted #126 twice. I also added some late arriving (post 01-12-12) comments that I did not realize I had when first starting this exercise today. In actuality some of the comments are responses by Audiogon addressing a member's question or concern. Which brings me to the very last posting-#128 which I received this afternoon (3:42pm 01-14-12). Number 128 is an open letter from the people in charge at AudiogoN. What is of VERY special interest is the 5th line UP from the end of the e-mail. Take a look and you will find a link "See all comments". I encourage you to click on it and barring some kind of miracle, you will find only ONE comment. Can someone please help me understand why all the comments I posted on this Stereophile forum, taken from a WordPress managed "Audiogon Update" blog, are not available on the Audiogon web site? Is it because they are hidden somewhere within AudiogoN's "New Look" format and I (and others) cannot find them? Or are they being posted and managed exclusively off site via WordPress? These comments should be on the AudiogoN website for all to see, read and discuss. If I have somehow managed to overlook where they are on the AudiogoN site, I am sure most of you Goners will understand why. I would hope that the powers to be @ AudiogoN make it clear as to where the discussion forum is located so all members (and visitors/future members) can participate in discussing the changes that are taking place on AudiogoN.

dear audiophile brothers:

against my better judgment, i posted my turntable yesterday.  i paid extra for the "featured" feature.  i don't know what you get for that extra money.  there is no picture section up front like there used to be and it would have been in there at some point.  the only pictures are from the manufacturer sponsors.  this morning, i can't get past the home page.  "application error" is about all you see when you try to get into turntables.  a user asked me a question and the audiogon software gave me "application error" when i tried to respond.  i was able to look up the members name through the back door and do "send member an email" as they have not messed with that system yet.

i used to just pay their high prices and hold my nose because the site is really the only game in town.  at least it was benign to use.  now it is totally crap.  i hope to sell my table, but feel i will probably wind up having wasted $24.

sign me:  deeply disappointed in cincinnati

I am looking to start a new site. In the short time I was using Audiogon, being a newbie in the audio world, I found it to be ok but at the same time pretty flaky and unresponsive at times. I am a Unix/Linux engineer by trade and would be able to handle all the server setup and backend work. I just need a few developers and business guys that would be interested in spending time to start something new to replace Audiogon. My vison would be to have something similar to Craigslist but only for audio equipment. Fast small stable and simple. That's the best way to be with web applications which the vast majority of people forget and wind up writing something like the new gon site. It's horrible doesn't function as it should is buggy like crazy and I for one am ready for a change. Please PM me if you would like to contribute and be involved.  Thanks.

Islandsound: Your idea of starting up a replacement site for AudiogoN is an admirable gesture for sure and I am certain you would have quite a following of members to your venture. Thank you for your enthusiasm and willingness to jump into this fray. It is however, quite an undertaking.......but not impossible. You talk about something simple for a replacement site but I have to say that the original AudiogoN site was simple to me......in a good way. It worked. I have nothing to offer but encouragement (I am not a developer or businessman) and hope others who read this forum can spread the word among friends and business associates. Lets hope something catches fire.

Good news:

It seems that audiogon may be listening.  They are changing a little.  It still is far from being as good as it use to be but it is slowly getting better.  If there is any better indication as to how bad the revised site is received, by my estimate daily new items sale are down at least 30-40%.  The market is clearly not happy!

To start a site would be crap shoot.  TAS has tried to do a site but lets be kind and say it just isn't working.  I still remain optimistic that audiogon will listen touts users and continue to evolve into something better than the old site and not like it is now.
