Adding a tube preamp before or after receiver to give tube sound?

Why would you want tube sound? Is your system sterile sounding?
Sterile? You could say that. It's a Kenwood VR-505 Surround Sound Receiver. I'm just using it for stereo sound at the moment. It was gifted to me.
So I guess my question now would be would it be better to add the tube processor or look around for a 70's reciever for around the same price? The Kenwood does have digital inputs for use with a DVD player, etc. So picking between the two is a tough decision for me. If I keep the Kenwood I'll also have to get a preamp for the phono.
