My first TT was a B&O RX-2. I bought it when I was 13 back in the earl 80's. I bought a new MMC4 cart for it back in the early 90's and never used it. I recently found myself back into vinyl and broke out the old RX-2. It works perfectly, but it was quickly replaced with my Father-In-Laws old 1973 Pioneer deck. I purchased a Ortofon Blue cart for the Pioneer for $200.00 and it sounds as good or better (with some vinyl) than my $2000.00 cd-player! The RX-2, in my opinion is more about looks than performance, however it is a fine deck to utilize as a starter. Unfortunatly, I believe Soundsmith is the only company that makes replacment carts for the old B&O's. The good news, Soundsmith makes excellent products and I'm sure one of their carts will blow away my very old cart and I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you decide to spend the cash. The big question is, how much do you want to spend to see if you're going to become an enthusiast? Maybe a garage sale TT with a $70.00 Shure cart is the better way to go to start. Good luck and be careful, this audio hobby can become an obsession, and not an inexpensive one!
