New Music: Suun’s “Bambi” & “Red Song”

I’ve been enjoying “Bambi” and “Red Song,” two new pulsing, angular, seductive tracks from Montreal’s Suuns.

The band explains:

With a couple weeks off this summer in Montreal, we thought we’d take a crack at a few new songs. Stark and futuristic, these are extended jams that may or may not materialize as condensed versions of themselves on records to come. Open air textures, repetition and exploration were the name of the game for us on this one, and the finished product is a refined mining of the ideas that came out. “Bambi” is a creepy story of love lost and found, while “Red Song” is just that: a song about color.

Suuns play tonight at the Mercury Lounge here in NYC, then hit the road and cross the Atlantic Ocean, touring throughout the fall. “Bambi” backed with “Red Sun” will be available on 12” vinyl on November 15, thanks to Secretly Canadian.

Mejias,

It's bad enough that we readers have to put up with your idiocy about the latest and greatest $500, half meter USB cable that you ever heard. 

Now you're pushing some POS band from Montreal that's noodling around with a couple soft synths in a DAW. Great! Wait... are you banging one of the dudes in this band? That's it, right? Cause it can't be the music. They make the Flying Lizards' cover of "Money" sound like the absolute best that Steven Wilson & Porcupine Tree have to offer.

You're a clown. This is a joke, isn't it? No? I guess you are banging the lead singer. Hope he's cute, at least.

that could be made by anyone warbling a few words through a karaoke mic in to a daw playing a few preset riffs and then plastering it with reverb. it shows zero musical talent and even worse sound production ability. if you spend thousands of pounds on hifi to listen to that, your wasting your life and your money. i would get another hobbie.

To Musician and Jeffca.

Calm down. I for one loved the song. Sounds great through my system, and I'll be checking out the rest of the album. If it's not to your tastes, so be it, but please don't become the guy who yells at everyone not listening to what they think music has to be. And please don't be so dismissive of different styles of music. Once again, it doesn't have to be your thing, but that does not mean it's bad, or talentless.

To Mr. Mejias: Thank you for speaking to a wide section of the hi fi world that listens to different music than the average equipment reviewer. I'm far more interested in how LCD Soundsystem sounds on an $800 pair of speakers than Rachmaninoff on $130k speakers, because I'm not there yet. Maybe one day. I love your articles, love what you choose to review, love the music you put me on to (Amon Tobin! Amazing!!), and love how you write from the heart. Keep it up.

... But, I think that in this particular case that you aren't.

I like a lot of different musical genres and enjoy cheesy crap (early B-52's and the like) as much as the next guy. If it has some heart and, most importantly, some soul, I'm, at the very least, a little bit there, but this is garbage.

So I don't seem like a thorough contrarian, I just started a new gig and had to update my music library. While I could have bought a lot of stuff, I went through my iTunes library and asked myself, "who would I really like to hear more of ?"

I'd downloaded several tunes by Ra and was quite amazed by Sahaj Ticotin's voice and their songs. Their album, Duality, is incredible as is their kick-ass cover of The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic".

I did what any crazy music nut does... I bought all of their CD's in one fell swoop. 

The band is awesome as is Haj's and the rest of the band's vocals. I thought, perhaps, that the songs were just Haj doing everything, but, no, on their live album, "Raw", the whole band is singing (unless they pulled a studio trick like Kiss did with their "live" album... I hope not). Holy crap, are these guys not only good, but fucking great. And, basically, nobody knows about them. Unfortunately, the audio quality of all their stuff is dreadful.

My thought is this: may be, Mr. Mejias should expand his horizons and his knowledge of music. It's sorely lacking.

That and don't promote your boyfriend's crappy band here.

Completely my pleasure, Dave.  Thank you.  As I've said before, the fact that I get to share my thoughts about music with people all over the world is a real gift.  I feel very fortunate.
