I could not have said it better. Only one thing I did different - I only scanned this piece of useless fluff since actually reading it would have been a complete waste of time. Stereophile is badly in need of a real music editor, one that can differentiate between worthless trash and actual music news.
Back on May 10th, it was announced there would be some vinyl: http://www.pinkfloyd.com/news/ (scroll down to it)
I can see how Mason couldn't be bothered to be aware of it; less so the journalist with a modicum of effort.
is exciting for me! Whether a better vinyl pressing or digital, I really would like to hear it in a better pressing/definition. And the surround of DSOTM was interesting and worth hearing, even if I prefer the 2 channel. So I am sure I will have at least some of this new merch on my Christmas list.

But there is absolutely no reason to listen to them in 2-channel stereo. Get the Blu-Rays of their concerts, sit down in a good HT setup, and you'll see what it is all about.
I do not need a reason other than a whim! Sometimes I prefer two channel and sometimes I prefer surround. It is a mood thing I guess. And I am happy for other people to swear their allegience to one or the other, but I am not eager to take a side. So I will listen to them in surround some and in two channel some.

Oh really? How about this for a reason: because 2 channel stereo (isn't all stereo 2 channel?) is how all the original Pink Floyd albums were recorded.
Any and all multi-channel versions of their recordings are FAKE, as in not recorded in multi-channel. Think of these hack jobs as identical to all those "electronically reprocessed for stereo" recordings.
By the way, "what it is all about" is about get suckers to part with their money by selling them electronically reprocessed for multi-channel originally recorded in stereo recordings for an inflated price.
You're right, the albums are all stereo as far as I know, but there are Pink Floyd concert BR disks with astonishing multichannel sound. That's what I am talking about. Let that blue Master Audio light show on your HT receiver, you'll be smiling - guaranteed!
LOL of course they were released in stereo ... not recorded in stereo.
8- or 16 or whatever discrete channels would have been the norm for major studio recordings of famous bands with decent budgets in the '70s.
All they would have to do to make it a legit surround mix is to well, remix it. Let's not make this an unnecessary conspiracy.
