Well, in a sense it does. As the electromagnetic field ramps up then down, the residual magnetism is eliminated on whatever's on the "deck", either an LP or CDs, or cables/connectors. So when it's done, I suppose you could say the device itself is demagnetized.

It doesn't need to "know" how to demagnetize one from the other as long as the magnetic field is strong enough to evercome whatever magnetic anomolies are in the LP or disc.

Well, there's a power on/off button. You turn it on, then you press the activate button, and it ramps up the field, then down again, the little light goes off, and you're done. Turn the LP or CD/CDs/DVDs over and do it again.
And you just have to read the original description above to see how "AL" becomes magentized.

AL is non ferrous, how does magnetism affect it?

Here's a report on a test!

I have this TEAC demagnetizer and applied it to a Mozart Requiem and to an Ellington big Band recording, too.
I tried two different ways, a radial and a concentric application.
Recorded both prior and after demagnetization to my Alesis Masterlink.
Turntable is a Gyrodec with a Van den Hull "One Special" pickup, Origin Live modified RB250 arm and Trichord Delphini phono pre-amp. Listening through Sony headphone CD3000.

If this works then either I'm not hearing well or it is sooooo subtle it ain't worth the trouble.

I suppose the only thing this experiment proved is I'm willing to try just about anything!
