There have been some audiophile reviewers aand users who claim these actually sound very good.

Thanks for the tip. Those speakers are about $500 each. Read on and tell me what you think of the following.

I have also been told to look at Klipsch La Scala II and Klipsch RF-7 & RC-64 II's. Folks in the forums at Klipsch are telling me to consider replacing the 5 speakers with these. The La Scalas are $2,900 each (new), or $14,500 just for speakers, and the reference series would cost $7,700 for speakers only.

The sensitivity of the La Scalla II's is 105db 1 wat/1 meter. That is crazy! The others are 101db. The CV,s are a respectable 96, which doesn't compare to the Klipsch's.

Let's say my budjet is $10,000. What setup would you good stereophiles recomend for some ass kicking 70's rock?

is what you should be concerned with. All those will play loud, some with a little less power required. Bad loud will drive you and guests from the room after a couple of tunes. And some only sound decent when they are playing loud so I'd be careful what I wish for.

Some Klipsch fits your needs. I would add JBL as well. Still I doubt those particular CV's would give up anything to the others in sound quality.

Any thoughts on amps? How about Marantz AV7005 paired with a marantz MM8003? If I did that, I would have $3,900 invested in hardware, and $1,500 in the CV speakers. That's $5400 total. Not too shabby!

Thoughts? Are the Marantz components way too good for the CV speakers??

I own a pair of Klipsch Chorus II's that I have retired at this point but used them exclusively for over 2 years with an inexpensive Adcom GFA 555II amplifier (200watts p/ch). These were 3-way towers that had 2x15's per cabinet with separate Horns for Mids & Highs.

To say that these things could rock would be a bit of an understatement. At full song they could generate enough energy and sound pressure in my room to cause my scalp to vibrate. No bullshit! Now my room was much smaller then yours but I wouldn't doubt that the La-Scala could probably fulfill your needs and sound good while doing it

I understand these things speakers sound very sweet with tube amps as well but I'm not sure if a tube amp can take the same beating as a solid state amp can when used during long listening sessions at high SPL. My Adcom would get soo hot after about 3-4 hrs that you couldn't even touch it with your bare hands. It was a total misuse of equipment and my hearing but it didn't matter at the time. The Adcom/Klipsch combo kept my buddies and me very entertained every weekend for over 2 years never shutting down once.

Highly recommended for your purpose

I have been shopping and driving A LOT, and now have 2 pairs of La Scala speakers installed. I bought the whole set of 4 for $2,500 including fuel. Less than the cost of one La Scala II. They are easily filling the room at low volume levels. They lack sub (below about 60 Hz), so I am now looking at some Danley DST-10's. I am told it will probably take 2 of them to keep up with 5 La Scalas. (Yes, I need 1 more La Scala for center channel)
Once I get the sub's, I will be buying a Marantz AV7005 and pairing it an amp or three or five.
The Danley sub is 1000 continuous 2000 watt peak. Any recommendations on amps for those?
Any recomendation on amps for the La Scalas? They are 70-100 watts continuous, and 280-400 watts peak.

Damn, that sub looks like its all business. Although, with 5 La Scala's in a room you would certainly need something of the Danley caliber to keep up. I would probably look at something made by Crown or similar to power those subs. I'm not sure if the Crown amp is the best choice for the main speakers in terms of SQ though.

Having to power 5 fronts throws a bit of a curve ball into the picture, otherwise I would say 2 x Adcom GFA 555II's or similar and then wire the speakers two per channel. This would give you about a 100watts per speaker running the amp at a 4ohm load.

The Adcoms are stable down to 1ohm. The specs also claim a damping factor of 800 also which would be important with this type of wiring configuration.

Ebay can be your best friend when shopping for amps to power a setup like this. Sounds like a fun setup

Where you place your speakers and how you position them (straight ahead, distance from walls pointed at you, etc) play a major role in how good a system sounds in a room. Also, making sure your sources, amplification and speakers all work together according to YOUR ears. For example, one person might like Klipsch speakers with HK amp. Another may hate it. Add room acoustics to the mix and start moving those speakers around and you may hate a combo you loved in the store or visa versa. Move them some more and you might change your mind again.
